Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release

Buffalo, N.Y. - A back-and-forth slugfest went the way of the surging Buffalo Bisons (Toronto Blue Jays) Friday night at Coca-Cola Park as the Herd posted two five-run frames en route to an 11-7 win over the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (Triple-A/New York Yankees). Buffalo mashed eight extra-base hits in the ballgame, highlighted by a 3-for-4 night by catcher George Kottaras.

It started so well. Jose Pirela began the first with his second lead off home run of the year; a majestic shot to left that gave the RailRiders the initial lead, 1-0. It would not last. Starter Matt Tracy spun two perfect frames and, in the process, posted four strikeouts before running into trouble in the third. All nine Bisons stepped to the plate in a five-run frame, painted with four extra-base hits and a two-run triple by Anthony Gose that catapulted Buffalo to a 5-1 lead.

The RailRiders promptly used a three-run fourth to slice the deficit to 5-4. A one-out base hit by Zoilo Almonte set the tone. A double by Scott Sizemore followed to push Almonte to third and Austin Romine's ground ball RBI meant the RailRiders' first run of the inning. The boys from SWB weren't done just yet, as John Ryan Murphy joined the party with a two-run dinger to draw the RailRiders to within one.

Buffalo answered with a run in the fifth when Cole Gillespie ripped a single to right, but two more runs in the RailRiders' seventh brought the contest back to sea level at 6-6. Buffalo sent ten-men to the plate in a five-run seventh that pushed the game out of reach. A ninth inning rally saw Rob Refsnyder drive in a run, but Almonte struck out with runners at first and second to end the game, 11-7.

Jim Miller (6-4) took the loss, recording just one out in the Bisons' five-run seventh. Miller faced seven batters and allowed four runs on three hits in the loss. Buffalo's Ryan Tepera (6-3) posted the win in relief, firing two frames and allowing two runs.

The RailRiders continue the six-game road trip when the club opens a four-game series with the Rochester RedWings (Minnesota Twins) Saturday, August 23 at 4:35 p.m. The RailRiders will toss left-handed pitcher Manny Banuelos (1-0, 1.13) while the RedWings send the left-handed Sean Gilmartin (2-4, 4.36) to the bump. John Sadak and Aaron Berlin will have the call on radio with the pregame show beginning at 4:05 p.m. on NEPA Sports Radio - The GAME, Northeast PA's largest sports radio network: 100.7 FM, 1340 WYCK-AM, 1400 WICK-AM, 1440 WCDL-AM and 106.7 FM.
