Durham Bulls News Release
DURHAM, N.C. - The first-place Durham Bulls defeated the Gwinnett Braves 5-2 in the opener of a four-game series Friday night at the DBAP.
Right-hander Alex Colome (7-5) earned the victory with seven solid frames, allowing just two runs (one earned) on six hits while striking out seven, while southpaw Adam Liberatore earned his first save of the season by recording the final four outs, extending his scoreless inning streak to a career-best 18 2/3 frames.
The win, paired with a loss by the second-place Norfolk Tides, gives the Bulls an 8.0-game lead in the IL South Division with 11 games remaining, while shrinking the Bulls' magic number to clinch a playoff spot to four.
Durham (69-64) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Vince Belnome singled home Jeremy Moore who had walked earlier in the frame. In the fifth Mikie Mahtook padded the Durham lead, crushing a two-run homer to put the home side in front 3-0.
Gwinnett (59-73) cut into the deficit in the sixth frame on Ozzie Martinez's RBI groundout. After the Bulls reopened a three-run lead in the bottom of the inning on Mayo Acosta's sacrifice fly, the G-Braves plated a run in the top of the seventh on Elmer Reyes' triple to centerfield.
The Bulls scored for the final time in the bottom of the eighth, when Belnome doubled and came around to score on a single to rightfield from Ray Olmedo.
G-Braves starter Cody Martin (6-8) took the loss, allowing four runs on six hits in 5 1/3 innings of work.
The series continues Saturday when Durham sends LHP Mike Montgomery (9-5, 4.29) to the hill against Gwinnett RHP Aaron Northcraft (0-6, 6.18). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
