North Bay Battalion News Release
OWEN SOUND, Ont. - Holden Cook scored one goal and added one assist in pacing the Owen Sound Attack to a 3-1 victory Saturday over the North Bay Battalion in Ontario Hockey League preseason action.
Santimo Centorame and Petrus Palmu also scored for Owen Sound. Starting goaltender Brandon Hope stopped all 12 shots he faced before yielding to reliever Michael McNiven at 11:02 of the second period. McNiven allowed the North Bay goal among 13 shots.
Brenden Miller scored for the Battalion, while goaltender Evan Cormier made 29 saves. The Troops, who saw their exhibition record evened at two wins and two losses, host Owen Sound in a rematch at 2 p.m. Sunday.
With the teams skating four a side, Palmu gave the Attack a 3-0 lead at 11:01 of the third period, chipping the puck home from the left lip of the crease.
Subsequent non-coincidental penalties to Zach Bratina of the Troops and Jeffrey Gilligan of Owen Sound saw the teams skating three-on-three when defenceman Miller teed up a shot from the right-wing circle and beat McNiven at 12:32. Miles Liberati drew the lone assist.
Centorame opened the scoring during a two-man advantage at 5:24 of the first period, converting on a backdoor play that gave Cormier no chance to stop a one-timer into the gaping open right side.
Cook connected at 14:27 when, with the Troops retreating in their own zone and trying to ring the puck around the perimeter, Owen Green chipped the disc directly to the forechecking Cook.
The Attack held a 16-6 edge in shots and a three-to-one advantage in power plays in the period, neither of which properly reflected the play. The Battalion, which drew immediate attention from the officials when Miller was sent off for slashing nine seconds into the game, had three players go to the box in the first 5:10.
Owen Sound, which received the only two penalties assessed in the second period, outshot the visitors 13-6 in the frame. Cormier was forced to make rapid-fire saves against Kyle Platzer and Jacob Friend in the opening seconds as the Attack killed a late first-period penalty to Cook.
