The Saginaw Spirit travelled to Compuware Arena for their second preseason game of the weekend against the Whalers, falling to Plymouth 2-1 in a shootout decision.

The Whalers followed suit from last nights performance and opened the scoring at the 14:36 mark on a powerplay goal by Francesco Vilardi. Assists on the goal went to Victor Crus Rydberg and Will Bitten. Saginaw went to the powerplay twice in the opening period and outshot the Whalers 12-9.

The second period saw Saginaw still trailing Plymouth 1-0. Starting goaltender Nikita Serebryakov kept the Whalers from finding the back of the net in the period, blocking 11 shots in the second. Saginaw finished the period with 10 shots on goal.

Towards the later part of the second, the Spirit tied up the game on a powerplay goal by Marcus Crawford, assisted by Jimmy Lodge. The Spirit and Whalers did not see another goal recorded the rest of the game, sending the teams to a shootout.

Plymouth's Connor Chatham missed the first shot on net for the Whalers, leaving an opportunity for Saginaw to pull ahead. The Spirit had San Jose draft pick Dylan Sadowy, start off the shootout for Saginaw, but he could not beat Plymouth's starting goal tender Alex Nedeljkovic. Center Mathew Campagna scored for the Whalers, but the Spirit's Artem Artemov could not retaliate. Plymouth finished off the game as Columbus Blue Jackets draft pick Sonny Milano, scored for the Whalers, ending the game 2-1. Final shots on goal Saginaw 33 and Plymouth 30.

The Spirit will return home to the Dow Event Center Friday, September 12th as they host the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds.
