Over 7,000 students to attend Face Off Field Trip game January 23
December 30, 2006 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Mississippi RiverKings News Release
SOUTHAVEN --- The fourth annual Face Off Field Trip will take place Tuesday, January 23, 2007 when the RiverKings face off against the Bossier Shreveport Mudbugs at 10 a.m. at the DeSoto Civic Center.
Face Off Field Trip provides students not only the chance to attend a professional hockey game, an event many students might never have the chance to attend, but it is also a unique educational opportunity.
Third through sixth grade students in schools throughout DeSoto, Tunica, Tate and Shelby counties will be attending the game. "Over 7,300 students are scheduled to be in attendance," explained Michael Rice, Community Development staff member for the RiverKings. "This is by far our biggest turnout yet. We are just as excited for this event as the children are."
This year's game will be a regulation game against a league rival, the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs. "The children will enjoy the game," Rice said. "But we hope what they enjoy most, is the unique way in which educational information will be passed along."
Workbooks will be provided to the students and teachers in attendance covering math, geography, reading, writing, etc. Furthermore, in-crowd activities during game breaks will be interactive learning sessions, referencing the workbook.
"We want the students to be excited about the game, so when we have lessons in math, geography or health, they'll be having so much fun, they'll forget they are learning," Rice stated. "We are proud of what this event has grown to. We have public, private, and home school students within the four counties attending."
"With this educational event being hosted free of charge to the students and schools, we are seeking sponsorship donations. A sponsorship for ten students costs $90, five students $45," explained Jody O'Donnell, RiverKings Director of Ticket Sales.
Volunteers are as essential to this event as sponsors are. "Without the help of the volunteers this event would be chaotic," said Rice. "With their help it is one of the top educational and entertaining events ever."
Volunteers for the Face Off Field Trip are still needed. For further information regarding the Face Off Field Trip, to help sponsor this event, or to volunteer your time please contact the RiverKings office at 662.342.1755.
