Hounds Play Tough but Lose at Home to Riverkings
December 30, 2006 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Youngstown SteelHounds News Release
The Youngstown SteelHounds met up with the Memphis Riverkings again on Saturday night from the Chevrolet Centre and once again the Kings were able to leave the Hounds singing the blues on "Elvis Weekend" with a 5-3 victory.
The SteelHounds got the goal scoring started early as Shaun Landolt recorded his eight of the season just 90 seconds into the game to make it 1-0 Y-Town. The lead would not last as 15 minutes later Louis Dumont would score for Memphis to tie the game at one. The Riverkings notched one more before intermission with Ryan Campbell's first of an eventual hat trick to make it 2-1 after one period.
The Hounds would welcome a new member in 6ft6 Dallas Anderson and Anderson would come in with a bang as 2001-2002 CHL leader in penalty minutes with the Tulsa Oilers got into with the Kings Will Bodine at 6:14 of the second period. Not to be outdone, Y-Town's Mark Johnson got into the fisticuffs and took down Derek Campbell with a throw to the ice later in the period.
There was goal scoring in the second period as well as at 4:42 Paul Esdale would score his seventh of the season from Jeff Christian and Brad Patterson to tie the game at two. The assist for Christian, his 36th of the season extended his league leading point streak to 15 games. Christian would not be done as after a Travis Banga power play goal to give Memphis the lead, the captain scored a controversial power play goal at 16:50 to tie the game at three after two periods. The call of the goal made Riverking net minder, Larry Sterling irate to the point that he started arguing with fans.
The third period was deadlocked until Ryan Campbell snuck in his second of the night with 13 minutes to play to make it 4-3 for the Kings. Campbell added an empty netter with five seconds left to get the hat trick and his 15th goal of the season to put the game out of reach and give Memphis a 5-3 win.
The loss drops the Hounds to 14-8-6 with 34 points and now trail the Kings by seven who improved to 19-6-3 with 41 points. Youngstown will be on the road for six straight starting next Thursday night when they take on the Rocky Mountain Rage at 9:05 EST. All games can be heard on WBBW, ESPN Radio 1240-The Fan and on steelhounds.com.
