New Mexico Scorpions News Release
[ PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. ]- The New Mexico Scorpions, proud member of the Central Hockey League (CHL), dropped their second straight game to Arizona by an 8-3 margin Saturday night. The win pushed Arizona into first place in the Southwest Division.
The first period started slowly as the teams got the cobwebs out from a long, snowy, overnight journey from Rio Rancho. It looked like the first period would end scoreless but the last four minutes proved otherwise.
Brent Kelly pushed an acrobatic goal through the legs of goalie Brad Smith to give the Sundogs their first lead of the game. The goal was only the start of a big night for Kelly.
New Mexico wasted no time coming back. Ryan McLeod, deep in the offensive zone, moved the puck back to Aaron MacInnis on the blue line. MacInnis immediately returned the puck to McLeod who had an open net to push the puck into, tying the game.
The Sundogs brought the home fans back to life with only six seconds remaining in the first period. Arizona was awarded a power play late in the period and Karl Sellan put a rebound goal home to send Arizona into the locker room with a one goal advantage.
Arizona started the second period the way they ended the first period, with a goal. Adam Campbell's shot took off and Cory Stillman redirected it into the net for his tenth goal of the year.
At 13:18 the Scorpions cut the lead in half. Rob Guinn fed a two line pass to McLeod who beat goalie Chris King with a backhand, for his second goal of the night.
History has a way of repeating itself and it did late in the second period. Stillman picked up his second goal of the night as he roofed a shot over Smith's glove giving Arizona its two goal lead back after 40-minutes.
Arizona added to their lead in the third period with four additional goals. Kelly added his second goal and fourth point 4:59 into the final frame. Landry, Sellan and Dan DaSilva each added a goal giving Arizona their biggest offensive output of the season. Josh Garbutt scored the lone Scorpions goal in the final period, his first in a New Mexico sweater.
The Scorpions will be back in action Sunday night when the same two teams end 2006 with the final professional hockey game in North America . The two teams will face off inside Tim's Toyota Center at 8:05 p.m. The Scorpions return to home ice Friday, Jan. 5 for Elvis Night and Saturday, Jan. 6 for Military Appreciation Night.
