B.C. Lions News Release
The local chapter of the Football Reporters of Canada has named the BC Lions nominees for the Rogers CFL Player Awards.
Geroy Simon was the unanimous selection as the club's Outstanding Player. Simon has enjoyed a stellar season to date racking up 99 catches for 1756 yards and 14 TD's. Last week versus Hamilton, Simon broke his own BC Lions single season mark for receiving yards (1750) that he set in 2004. This is the first nomination for Simon.
Brent Johnson earns the selection as the Lions' Outstanding Canadian and Outstanding Defensive Player. Leading a dominating defensive unit Johnson has pounded opposition QB's for a league-leading 15 sacks and has added 19 defensive tackles, three fumble recoveries and has also chalked-up two receiving touchdowns. Johnson won the Outstanding Canadian category in 2005
Rob Murphy gets the nomination as the Lions' Outstanding Lineman. Demonstrating determination and versatility, the first year Lion has taken the CFL by storm dominating defensive linemen throughout the league. Anchoring the line from his left tackle position, Murphy has helped lead the O-line in providing protection to the CFL's best passing attack of Dave Dickenson, Buck Pierce and Jarious Jackson.
Paul McCallum takes home the nomination for Outstanding Special Teams Player as he enjoys a very productive season back home in British Columbia. The veteran kicker has been good on 36 of 42 field goal attempts (85.7%) and currently sits third in CFL scoring with 161 points. Also serving as the team's punter McCallum has been steady in averaging 41.4 yards per boot.
Defensive lineman Aaron Hunt has been selected as the club's Outstanding Rookie. The first-year Lion was a unanimous choice among voters and has registered nine sacks, 14 defensive tackles, four TFL, one force fumble and two PKD's. Hunt's strong play is garnering attention from each of the CFL's opposing offences resulting in big plays by teammates and fellow D-linemen Tyrone Williams, Brent Johnson and Chris Wilson
The East and West Rogers CFL Player Award voting results will be announced on Tuesday, October 31.
The BC Lions final regular season home game is Saturday, October 28 at 7:00 pm versus the Winnipeg Blue Bombers at BC Place Stadium presented by Scotiabank.
