CFL Media Statement on NFL Announcement

Published on October 24, 2006 under Canadian Football League (CFL) News Release

Toronto, ON (October 24, 2006) - The National Football League (NFL) announced today that its owners have approved a plan to schedule up to two regular-season games per season outside the United States beginning in 2007 and continuing through at least the 2011 campaign.

The NFL has stated that this initiative is designed to increase its fan base, build awareness of the NFL outside of the United States and grow the sport worldwide. During recent meetings between senior executives from both Leagues, it was reaffirmed that a strong and healthy CFL is integral to the growth of football in Canada. The CFL and NFL will continue to work together on strategic initiatives to enhance football in Canada both at the professional and grassroots levels.

It is likely that Canadian cities could be among those identified as potential locations to host an NFL regular season game. It has been confirmed that any regular season game in Canada would not be played until 2008 at the earliest.

"The National Football League has been a valued partner and consistent supporter of the Canadian Football League for the past 10 years," said Commissioner Tom Wright. "There is a true sense of cooperation and mutual understanding at work, and we look forward to continuing our close association for many years to come.

"The vitality of the Canadian Football League and the development of football in Canada are our most important goals. The NFL respects and supports these goals."
