Chico Outlaws News Release
Yuma, AZ- The Chico Outlaws withstood another extra-inning affair on Friday night at Desert Sun Stadium, stinging the host Scorpions and coming out with a 9-5 win in ten innings in the opener of the three game set.
Fans attending Chico Outlaws games on their southern Arizona road trip through Tucson and Yuma have been getting plenty of free baseball, with the Outlaws playing three extra inning games in the last four contests.
Things got hot right off the bat and no, we're not talking about the game time temprature of 107 degrees. Outlaws leadoff hitter Mitch Einertson connected with Yuma starter Zach Cline's fastball to lead off the game and sent it sailing over the left field wall, putting Chico up 1-0 right out of the gate on the center fielder's sixth home run of the year.
The home team answered back in a big way in the bottom of the first, plating three runs off Outlaws starter Javier Ortiz. Singles by Jonel Pacheco and Santo Deleon with two outs led to back-to-back RBI doubles by Anthony D'Alphonso and Johny Celis, scoring three runs to give Yuma a 3-1 lead.
Yuma plated it's fourth run unearned style when catcher Franklin Lopez scored from third on an attempted pickoff of shortstop Walter Correa at first base went awry and first baseman John Urick dropped the ball trying to throw Correa out. Urick was charged with an error on the play and it was 4-1 Scorpions.
Einertson struck again in the visitors half of the third, belting his second tater of the night and seventh of the year over the left field fence, cutting the lead to 4-2.
Staying in the thick of things in the top of the fifth, Einertson walked and stole second to lead off the frame. Second baseman Bobby Hill made the Scorpions pay immediately for that with an RBI double to score Einertson from second to make it a one-run game at 4-3.
Tensions between the Outlaws and Scorpions mounted in the bottom of the fifth inning when Yuma first baseman Santo DeLeon was at the plate and pitch ruled a ball by the home plate umpire was overturned by one of the base umpires. Scorps manager Daryl Brinkley took exception to the call, then got into a heated discussion with Outlaws third baseman Ismael Castro. Ortiz ran over from the pitcher's mound to separate Brinkley and Castro, which ignited a benches-clearing incident; however; no punches were thrown and order was restored quickly.
The Outlaws took the lead in the sixth when catcher Hank Lanto, subbing for GBL All-Star Mike Rose, got a one out single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Ortiz then laced a double to left, scoring Lanto. Ortiz eventually scored on a wild pitch by Scorpions reliever Ronny Malave, giving Chico a 5-4 lead.
The Scorpions tied the game at five each in the bottom of the seventh after Peeter Ramos reached first on a throwing error by Outlaws shortstop Pascual Del Real. Ramos then came around to score on Pacheco's RBI double, knotting up the game.
Rusty Jones (1-1) came out of the Outlaws bullpen in relief of Ortiz, pitching two and a third innings of scoreless relief. Batting for himself in the eighth, Jones cracked a triple to right field. Leading off the top of the tenth inning off veteran big leaguer Bill Pulsipher (3-5), who was coming out of the bullpen on short rest, Jones launched a homerun ball deep into the Arizona night over the right field wall, putting the Outlaws up 6-5.
Chico scored three more runs in the tenth on a two-RBI single by Ismael Castro and left fielder JJ Sherrill scoring on a wild pitch, making the final score 9-5.
Matt Perisho finished the game for the Outlaws, pitching a 1-2-3 tenth inning.
The Outlaws improved to 33-10 on the year, while Yuma falls to 26-18 on the year and in the thick of a GBL South Division first half title chase with Maui.
Game two of the three game series is Saturday night at Desert Sun Stadium, with first pitch set for 6:30 pm. Leftie Mark McLemore starts for the Outlaws looking for his fourth win of the year.
