Edmonton Capitals News Release
Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Capitals are taking a franchise-record 12-game winning streak into the Golden Baseball League all-star break thanks to a 4-2 win over the Tijuana Cimarrones Saturday night at TELUS Field.
The Caps closed out the first half of the season with a five-game sweep of the Cimarrones, outscoring their Mexican opponents 45-23 during the series.
First baseman Cliff Brumbaugh led the way for the red-hot Caps on Saturday, going 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. He leads the Golden League in both categories with 14 homers and 54 RBI. Centre fielder Steve Brown also had a quality performance, going 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.
Starting pitcher Alexander Francisco improved his record to a perfect 4-0, giving up two runs on just four hits while striking out five Cimarrones. Closer Chad Blackwell got a strikeout and a double play in the ninth to earn his ninth save.
The first half of the season is now complete, as the Caps finished second in the North Division with a 28-15 record. Despite Edmonton's impressive winning streak, the Chico Outlaws have captured the first-half division title, and officially claimed a spot in the post-season. In order to qualify for the playoffs, Edmonton must now either win the second half, or have a better overall record than any other North squad if Chico wins again.
In the meantime, the Golden League all-stars will take on the top players from the Northern League in a showdown of two of the top independent baseball circuits at the 2010 All-Star Game on Wednesday in Tucson, Arizona. The Caps will be represented on the Golden League squad by Brumbaugh, Tim Collaro and Francisco.
The all-star trio will have to get back to Edmonton right away, as the Caps kick off the second half of the season at home on Thursday at 7 p.m. for the first game of a seven-game homestand. They battle the Yuma Scorpions July 15-18, and then the Cimarrones are back in town July 19-21.
The Capitals are Edmonton's first choice for professional baseball and family entertainment. Season seats start at less than $9 per game and are available pro-rated for the balance of the season. Individual game tickets are available for just $10 every game. Tickets are available at all Ticketmaster locations, the TELUS Field Box Office during regular business hours, by calling (780) 414-GOAL (4625) or online at capsbaseball.ca.
