Orange County Flyers News Release
FULLERTON, Calif. - Making his third start of the season for the Flyers, Kevin Altman worked his way out of jams and added what proved to be the game-winning RBI as the Flyers took the first game of a three game series against the Tucson Toros, 4-1, at Goodwin Field on Friday. Altman (2-2) allowed one run on four hits over 6 and 2/3 innings and struck out four Toros before turning the ball over to the bullpen.
Derek Perren put Orange County (19-21) on the board first with a solo homerun (2) in the third inning. One inning later, Tyler Keeble reached on an error and advanced to second base on an Alex Jamieson groundout. Pitcher Kevin Altman tapped an infield single to score Keeble for a 2-0 Flyers lead.
Altman worked out of jams in the third, fourth and fifth innings, as Tucson left two runners on base in each frame. In the third inning, the Toros has runners on second and third with one out, but Altman retired the next two batters. In the fourth, Tucson loaded the bases with no outs before Darren Blakely flied out to shallow center field, and Luis Apodaca hit into an inning ending double play.
The Toros (20-25) got on the board in the sixth as Ryan Priddy led off the inning with a triple and scored on a Francisco Plasencia sacrifice fly, cutting the Flyers lead to 2-1.
Orange County added two insurance runs off reliever Andrew Snowdon in the eighth inning. With one out, Sergio Pedroza tripled, and Tyler Keeble's squeeze bunt brought Pedroza home. Three batters later, Eric Pringle singled home Keeble for the 4-1 Flyers lead.
Bryan Harris tossed a 1-2-3 eighth inning to get the ball to Andre Simpson, who struck out three batters in the ninth inning for his eighth save of the season and fourth since July 2. Tucson starter James Garcia allowed two runs (one earned) over seven innings in a losing effort.
