Erie Otters News Release
St. Catherines, Ontario - The Otters fell for the first time in regulation to the Niagara IceDogs 5-2 Thursday night on the road. Kyle Pettit and Kurtis MacDermid scored for the Otters, while Darren Raddysh, Nick Betz, and Alex DeBrincat all extended their point streaks in the loss.
Niagara goaltender Brent Moran was the story of the first period with 18 saves on 20 shots. Blake Siebenaler took a tripping minor just over three minutes in, but it wasn't the Otters power play that opened the scoring. 30 seconds after the penalty expired, Betz sent a beautiful pass to Pettit who scored his fourth goal of the season for the 1-0 lead. Cory Genovese scored his first point since the Otters' home opener with the secondary assist.
MacDermid took an interference call just over halfway through the period and Niagara jumped on the opportunity. Siebenaler made up for his own penalty earlier by tying the game 30 seconds into the penalty. Despite a flurry of shots, Moran kept Erie from racking up goals. With minor penalties to both Anthony DeFruscia and Vince Dunn, the Otters went to two minutes of a 5-on-3 advantage.
At 19:05, Travis Dermott and Aleksandar Mikulovich took coincidental roughing minors, keeping it a two-man advantage for the Otters. With eight seconds to go in the period, MacDermid gave the Otters a 2-1 lead that the Otters took into the dressing room.
The second period was a momentum shift for the IceDogs. Despite taking four penalties, Niagara killed all of them while scoring three unanswered goals from Cody Payne, Johnny Corneil and Hayden McCool. After the second goal for Niagara in the period, Devin Williams was pulled in favor of Daniel Dekoning.
After a heavy hit from Cody Caron on Genovese to start the third, the pair dropped the gloves in a big fight at center ice. Caron gave the crowd the signal to get loud, and the momentum swing for Niagara continued. Despite big chances for the Otters, Moran continued to shut down the Erie offense, including robbing Connor McDavid and Dylan Strome of potentially game-changing goals. Graham Knott's goal late in the period was the final nail in the coffin, and the IceDogs became the first team to defeat the Otters in regulation in the 2014-15 season, bringing the Otters' record to 13-1-0-1.
DeBrincat (13), Betz (7), and Raddysh (7) all extended their point streaks with assists in the loss. The game was the first of the season in which both McDavid and Strome were held scoreless. MacDermid's third goal of the season becomes his career-high with the Otters, while Pettit's fourth of the year puts him within one of his career-high. The Otters' power play was held to 1/7, making a huge difference in the game. The Otters led the IceDogs in shots 40-21.
The Otters head home to host the Sarnia Sting Friday night at 7 p.m. before rounding out the three-in-three Saturday night at home against the Saginaw Spirit.
