Evansville Otters News Release
EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The Evansville Otters are proud to announce the addition of Dalphie Correa as the team's new hitting coach. Correa is no stranger to Independent Baseball where he played professionally for over 10 years. The New York native was signed as a free agent by the Montreal Expos in 1992 and played on the 1999 Frontier League Champion London Werewolves. Current Otters manager Andy McCauley was the skipper of that Werewolves team and is excited to add his former player to his coaching staff.
"He is a high energy coach with backgrounds in infielders, hitting, strength training, and conditioning," said McCauley. "I look forward to seeing his energetic impact on our team."
Correa began coaching in 2006 when he suffered a season ending injury with the Laredo Broncos of the United Baseball League. As interim manager, Corre's team won 11 of the final 16 games and advanced to the playoffs. He also served three years as a coach with Mayaguez Indians (Puerto Rican Professional Baseball League) as 1st base coach and 4 years as a 3rd base coach for the Lobos de Arecibo and Atenienses de Manatî - in the same league.
In the 2012 season, Correa accepted a managerial position, with the Vampiros de Moca of the Puerto Rico AA League, a Puerto Rican Professional Minor League Ball. Correa helped lead the Vampiros de Moca to the all-time league record in wins (39-7) and the team's first birth in the Puerto Rico AA League Championship Series. He was later named Manager of the Year. Correa has also worked as an instructor at the prestigious Puerto Rico Instructional Baseball League and the Gulf Coast Winter program. While there, he worked regularly with some of the top major and minor league players in the country.
"It is a great pleasure for me to be chosen to join this great team," said Correa. "We will be working hard together as a team. Just leave your heart on the field and you will see that with effort and God's blessing, we will reach what will be our goal: become the 2015 Frontier League Champions."
Boots Day, Evansville's hitting coach in 2014, will be the team's designated bench coach and outfield coach in 2015.
The Otters also signed left-handers Logan Ehlers and Manuel Rivera on Tuesday, and re-signed right-hander Will Oliver to a contract extension. Ehlers has pitched three seasons in the Detroit Tigers organization and Rivera was a seven year member of the Boston Red Sox franchise. Oliver was 3-1 last year for Evansville with a 1.95 ERA.
The Otters begin the 2015 season at home on Friday, May 15 when they host the Traverse City Beach Bums in a 6:35 p.m. game at Historic Bosse Field. This year is the upcoming 100th Anniversary of Bosse Field's first ballgame in 1915. The Otters will have a year-long celebration to commemorate the event with more details to be released at a future date. Businesses interested in participating with the Otters can contact the team front office at (812) 435-8686.
