Evansville Otters News Release
(MARION,Illinois) - The Evansville Otters (3-1-1) were hoping to end the exhibition season undefeated, but fell just short of doing so with a 5-2 loss at Southern Illinois on Tuesday.
The mid-morning game started at 10:05 in the morning and featured 3,683 fans on Kids Day.
Pitcher Dan Marcacci (formally of USI) started for Evansville and allowed just one run over three innings. The former USI Screaming Eagle also struck out five Miners in his last appearance before the regular season.
Evansville trailed 1-0 after the opening inning and were unable to score until the top of the eighth.
Down by four runs, the Otters fought back by being patient at the plate against right-hander Michael Herbert. Infielder Frank Martinez and first baseman Nick Schwaner both worked walks and later scored on a two-run double from shortstop Jon Karcich. Designated hitter Nick Farnsworth then represented the tying run at the plate but struck out to end the inning.
Southern Illinois added a late run and wound up winning the exhibition game 5-2.
Opening Day for the Otters at historic Bosse Field is Friday, May 18, 2012, when Evansville hosts the Washington Wild Things. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. CDT, and season tickets are on sale now.
