Miners Win Final Exhibition Game

Marion, IL - The Miners concluded their exhibition play with a 5-2 win over the Evansville Otters today at Rent One Park. The game was scheduled to go 10 innings.
The Miners got things going early in the bottom of the first against Evansville. After Darian Sandford led the inning off with a single, he stole second then advanced to third on a groundout by short-stop Jack Kaase. Chad Maddox then put the ball into play at short but a throwing error by Otters short-stop Jon Karcich allowed Sandford to score and Maddox to arrive safely at second.
That would be the only run the Miners would get off Otters starter Dan Marcacci as he threw three strong innings only allowing that run and one hit. He also struck out five. Miners starter Shawn Gilblair pitched two innings and only allowed one hit and struck out four.
When the bullpen took over for Evansville, that's when the Miners took advantage. Reliever Josh Cephas took over in the fourth inning. Chad Maddox led off the inning with a triple then scored on a Sean Coughlin sacrifice fly. In the bottom of the sixth the Miners scored two runs as Darian Sandford once again led off the inning by getting on base, this time with a walk. He stole second then Ryan Kaup moved him over with a single. Chad Maddox then brought them both home with a two RBI double. Matt Fields brought in another run with a sacrifice fly.
The Miners scored one more run in the bottom of the ninth as Cannon Lester hit a solo homerun. The Otters added two runs off reliever Mike Hebert in the eighth as Jon Karcich laced a two run double.
Darrin Tew, Ian Campbell and Albert Ayala also pitched for the Miners.
The Miners open up the regular season this Friday night as they welcome in the new London Rippers. The game will be broadcasted on US 97.7 and streamed online at www.southernillinoisminers.com . The pregame show will begin at 6:45 with first pitch scheduled at 7:05.
