MARION, Ill. - The Evansville Otters dropped the second-game of a three-game series 7-5 to the Southern Illinois Miners Saturday evening at Rent One Park.Â
The Otters opened the scoring in the second inning when Carlos Castro scored from third on a Manny Cruz groundball double play.
The Miners tied the game in the bottom half of the frame when Romeo Cortina singled home a run.
Evansville retook the lead in the top of the third. After doubling to lead off the inning, Hunter Cullen scored from third when Travis Harrison grounded out to second base.
The Otters tacked on another run in the fourth. Mike Rizzitello brought home Castro with a sacrifice fly to right field to put the Otters up 3-1.
The Miners stormed back to score four and take the lead in the sixth. With the bases loaded, Cortina singled home a run before Kurt Wertz Jr walked to force home a run and tie the game. John Holland then singled home two runs to put the Miners in front 5-3.
Southern Illinois added two insurance runs in the eighth when Holland doubled home a run and a subsequent throwing error on the relay throw back to the infield allowed a second run to score and put the Miners up 7-3.
The Otters scored two in the ninth, one on a wild pitch, the other on a Toby Thomas RBI single, but Travis Harrison struck out with the tying run on first to end the game with a final score of 7-5.
Otters starter Austin Nicely is saddled with the loss, his first of the year. Nicely pitched 5.2 innings, allowing four runs on six hits and striking out five.
Geno Encina collects the win for the Miners, his first of the year. Encina threw 6.2 innings, allowing three runs while striking out six batters.
Kyle Tinius came on in the ninth to record the final out and pick up his first save of the year.
The Otters and the Miners will finish up the three-game series tomorrow at 5:05 p.m. from Rent One Park.
