Evansville Otters News Release
(EVANSVILLE, INDIANA) - In one of their biggest days of the offseason, the Evansville Otters signed two players on Wednesday that have extensive experience in affiliated baseball. Right handed pitcher Ricky Bowen and catcher John Nester bring seven years of affiliated experience to the 2013 Evansville Otters roster and are expected to make big contributions this Frontier League season.
Bowen was a Florida State League All-Star last year with the Fort Myers Miracle, going 4-6 with a 2.95 earned run average for the Minnesota Twins A+ affiliate. He played collegiately at Mississipi State University before playing two seasons with the Cincinnati Reds organization and two additional seasons with the Twins. The Otters have high hopes for the Montgomery, Alabama native.
"Ricky should be a top of the rotation starter for us," said Otters manager Andy McCauley . "He has a power arm with great numbers from last season. We are looking forward to seeing him in spring training and working with him this summer."
"I want to get back to the postseason," said Bowen, "and help the Otters win the League."
Nester also has a lot of affiliated experience as a three year member of the Oakland Athletics organization. He has thrown out 27% of runners on stolen base attempts and is looked forward to an increased role with Evansville.
"With an injury to three-year Otters catcher Billy Killian, John will be looked at for the starting catcher position," added McCauley. "Nester has a strong background and will finally be able to get consistent at bats."
The Evansville Otters season starts on Friday, May 17 against the Normal CornBelters . The year will feature 51 home games including seven scheduled doubleheaders at Historic Bosse Field. Season tickets are already on sale and can be ordered by calling the Evansville Otters front office at (812) 435-8686. Businesses interested in participating with the Otters through advertising or group outings, should email ottersbb@evansville.net .
