Ottawa Rapidz Topple Worcester Tornadoes

(OTTAWA, ON) June 8, 2008 - In a game which saw a combined 26 hits, the Rapidz came out on top 11-8, which spoiled Worcester's three game unbeaten streak. The Rapidz were also able to donate $1,289 to the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation, donating $1 for every fan who wore pink to the stadium.

Orlando Trias (0-3) who started for the Rapidz was chased early from the game after surrendering six runs (all earned) on eight hits, two walks and registering one strikeout in 3.1 innings of work. Noel Baca (1-1) earned the win for the Rapidz while Jake Ociesa (0-2) was credited with the loss.

Worcester started the scoring in the second. Francisco Colabello hit his fourth home run of the season, tying him for the league lead and giving the Tornadoes a 1-0 lead after two innings.

Worcester scored three more runs on five hits to extend their lead to 4-0 after the top of the third.

The Tornadoes continued their hot hitting into the fourth. After allowing a double, single and a run, Orlando Trias was finished for the afternoon. Jose Guanchez replaced Trias, throwing a wild pitch which allowed BJ Weed to score. After four innings, Worcester extended their lead to 6-0.

The Rapidz responded in the bottom of the fourth inning. Jabe Bergeron walked and Kyle Geiger singled to place runners at the corners. Pete Pirman hit a single and Maxime Bouchard earned a walk to load the bases. Jared Lemieux then crushed a ball over the right field fence for his first home run and the Rapidz first grand slam in franchise history, cutting the lead to 6-5 after four.

The Tornadoes added another run in the top of the sixth for a 7-5 lead.

With the Rapidz again loading the bases, Jose de los Santos and Juan Infante drove in one runner each to tie the game at seven after six innings.

Worcester retook the lead in the top of the seventh, with consecutive singles by Mike MacMillan, Justin Edwards and Jeff LaHair produced one run and an 8-7 lead.

The lead exchanged hands again in the bottom of the inning, as the Rapidz continued their display of excellent hitting in front of an excited crowd of 1,912 at Rapidz Stadium. Jabe Bergeron and Kyle Geiger walked and singled to get onboard and then scored on a fielders choice by Pete Pirman. Felix Escalona drove in Pirman and the Rapidz took a 10-8 lead after seven innings.

The Rapidz added one more in the eighth to win 11-8. The Rapidz open a six game road trip on Tuesday, June 10 against the Brockton Rox and Worcester Tornadoes before returning home Monday, June 16 to face their national rivals the Quebec Capitales.
