MISSOULA, MONT - In front of a record crowd at Ogren Park Allegiance Field on Tuesday, the Missoula Osprey were stymied by the Billings Mustangs in a 10-4 setback.
The 4,316 fans who watched the game, and the fireworks afterward, saw the Osprey have their chances, but be denied by a Mustangs squad looking to avoid a four-game series sweep.
The Mustangs touched up Osprey starter Ross Gerdeman for six runs in the top of the third inning to take the lead that they would not surrender the rest of the night.
Ty Linton hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the fourth inning, his fourth of the season, to get the Osprey within 6-3. The teams traded runs in the seventh inning, and the Mustangs scored one in the top of the eighth and two more in the ninth to take a 10-4 edge.
The Osprey would load the bases in the bottom of the ninth inning, including a pinch-hit single by Evan Marzilli, who was making his professional debut. Pedro Ruiz singled and Breland Almadova walked to load the bases against Billings reliever Sean Lucas. However, Jake Lamb flied out to shallow center field to end the game.
Rudy Flores had two of the nine Osprey hits, while Almadova, Michael Perez, Justin Bianco and John Leonard added base hits.
The Osprey now head out on a six-game road trip to Great Falls and Helena, starting with a three-game series against the Voyagers at Centene Stadium. The Osprey will send right-hander Chris Pack to the mound in Wednesday's series opener in Great Falls, while the Voyagers will start right-hander Thomas Royse.
The Osprey will return home to start a seven-game homestand against Grand Junction and Orem on Wednesday, July 11. Tickets are available now at the MSO Hub Box Office, located at 140 North Higgins in Downtown Missoula, online at MissoulaOsprey.com and by phone (406) 543-3300.
