SALEM, Va. - With the game tied at four in the bottom of the ninth, Michael Osinski stroked a walk-off single to left to propel the Salem Red Sox to a 5-4 victory against the Dash on Wednesday night at Haley Toyota Field.
With Mike Morrison (4-3) on the mound in the deciding frame, Winston-Salem (13-7, 54-36) almost thwarted Salem's (12-8, 44-44) rally. After Tyler Hill drew a leadoff walk, Brett Netzer attempted to lay down a bunt. Initially ruled as a fair ball, Dash catcher Yermin Mercedes picked the ball up and started what was appeared to be a 2-6-3 double play. However, after deliberation, the play was ruled a foul ball, with the umpires saying it hit off Netzer's leg while he was in the box.
Netzer would ultimately bunt into a fielder's choice, but C.J. Chatham followed with a walk to put runners on first and second with one out. Two batters later, Osinski came through with the game-winning hit to bring home Hill and lift the Red Sox to a win. Harrison Cooney (1-0) earned the victory in relief, tossing two innings and allowing just one hit.
Making his first High-A start, right-hander Lincoln Henzman tossed a perfect first inning before yielding the first runs of the ballgame in the second. After Jerry Downs grounded a single up the middle with two outs, Trenton Kemp blasted his third homer of the series, a two-run shot to left-center to put the Red Sox ahead 2-0.
Winston-Salem did plate its first run of the contest in the next half inning against Red Sox starter Jake Thompson. Zach Remillard led off the frame by getting hit by a pitch, and Luis Gonzalez followed by reaching on a bunt single and a throwing error by Bobby Dalbec to put runners on second and third. Laz Rivera proceeded to drive home Remillard on an RBI fielder's choice.
The Red Sox added their final run off Henzman in the third via an RBI single from Chatham, as the Dash righty finished his outing by going three innings and allowing four hits and three runs while walking two and striking out two.
However, the Dash would take their first lead of the night in the fifth inning. After Yeyson Yrizarri doubled and Remillard walked, Gonzalez drilled a two-run double into the left-center gap to knot the contest at three.
Gonzalez, who finished 2-for-5 on Wednesday, has now posted nine multi-hit efforts over his first 17 games at the High-A level. Meanwhile, Rivera moved Gonzalez to third on a sacrifice bunt, and Rutherford drove him in on an RBI groundout to put Winston-Salem ahead 4-3.
Drew Hasler relieved Henzman and tossed two scoreless innings, giving the ball to Cameron Seitzer in the sixth. Seitzer did not allow a run in the sixth, but Hill tied the game at four in the seventh with an RBI single, setting the stage for Osinski in the ninth.
Winston-Salem wraps up its four-game series against the Red Sox on Thursday with a 7:05 p.m. contest. The Dash send left-hander John Parke (1-1, 2.65 ERA) to the hill against Salem right-hander Tanner Houck (4-10, 4.96 ERA).
