Osborn Dismantles Stormers

Pat Osborn went 4-for-4 with a homer and two doubles as the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs knocked off the Lancaster Barnstormers, 7-4, Friday evening in the opener of a three-game series at Regency Furniture Stadium.

The loss dropped the Barnstormers into a tie for second place, 1 ½ games behind Somerset in the Freedom Division.

Both starters, Lancaster's Chris Steinborn and the Blue Crabs' Bryan Morse, squirmed out of bases loaded jams early. Steinborn fanned Clinton Johnston and Jeremy Owens in succession after two walks and a single in the first; Morse allowed two singles and a walk in the second before striking out Mike Woods and Jutt Hileman in succession to escape.

Southern Maryland finally got to Steinborn (0-1) in the third. With one out, James Shanks cracked a double to the alley in left center. Curtis Pride followed with a double off the left field wall for a 1-0 lead, and Osborn followed with a two-run blast to left center as the Blue Crabs went up, 3-0.

Lancaster finally cracked the scoreboard in the sixth. Ivanon Coffie ended the night for Morse (1-1) with a one-out triple to the gap in right center. Matt LeCroy pushed the run across with a grounder to third and reached base when Osborn bobbled the ball for an error. Osborn atoned with a diving stop on David Castillo's ensuing ground ball to start a double play.

The Blue Crabs answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning off Pat Cassa. Chris Maples opened the inning with his 11th homer of the season, and the lead was stretched to 5-1 on an RBI single by Shanks.

The Barnstormers closed the gap in the seventh. With one out and Brian Munhall at first base, Woods crushed a ball over Owens' head in center for an RBI triple. Woods also scored when Owens' throw missed the cutoff man.

Again, Southern Maryland responded immediately. Osborn started the seventh with a double into the left field corner. One out later, Owens singled to left, moving Osborn to third. A wild pitch scored the sixth Crabs run of the night. Owens scored when he stole third and Castillo's throw skipped into left field.

Lloyd Turner drove in a two-out run for Lancaster in the ninth.

NOTES: Coffie stretched his hitting streak to six games...He has six extra-base hits in the streak...LeCroy added a pair of hits and has hit safely in four in a row...Steinborn struck out seven, the most by the left-hander since he fanned eight, May 9, 2004 in the Midwest League...Jason Scobie (1-2) will start for Lancaster on Saturday at 6:35 against knuckleballer Joe Gannon (6-3).
