Newark Bears News Release
NEWARK, NJ - In a game that featured a combined 24 hits, the Somerset Patriots outlasted the Newark Bears, defeating them 10-6 at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium on Friday night.
Leading the Bears 6-4 going into the eighth, the Patriots broke the game open by scoring four runs to take a 10-4 lead. The inning was highlighted by a three-run home run by Gera Alvarez, his fifth of the season.
The Bears staged a late inning rally, scoring two in the bottom of the eighth to cut the score to 10-6. Jose Herrera and Will Otanez both reached base on hits to start the inning. Herrera then scored on a sacrifice fly by Ruben Mateo and Randall Simon plated Otanez with an RBI single, but the Patriots lead proved insurmountable.
Consecutive doubles and a home run by Josh Pressley gave the Patriots a 3-0 advantage in the first and, after rendering the Bears scoreless in the bottom of the inning, they scored another three runs in the second. Teuris Olivares hit a two-RBI double and subsequently scored on a double by Jason Belcher.
Trailing 6-0, Mateo led off the bottom of the fifth by getting hit by a pitch. He then advanced to third on a Raul Gonzalez double and then scored on a groundout play by Manny Mejia to put the Bears on board.
The Bears cut two more runs into the Patriots lead the next inning with consecutive RBI doubles by Keith Reed and Herrera, making the score 6-3.
Manny Mejia homered for the second consecutive night - a solo shot over the right field wall - to make the score 6-4 in the bottom of the seventh.
Kip Bouknight (1-0) picked up the win, giving up one run and two hits over five innings. After giving up six runs in the first two innings, Roberto Giron (0-2) held the Patriots scoreless over the remainder of his 6.2 innings, but was saddled with the loss.
The Bears continue their series against the Patriots tomorrow night with a 6:05 game, featuring a pitching match-up between the Bears' Mike Bumstead (11-6) and Brian Adams (9-5) for the Patriots.
