Norfolk Tides News Release
Baltimore's Kevin Millar clubbed a two-run double in the bottom of the 8th inning, lifting the Orioles to a 6-5 win over the Washington Nationals in the Bank of the Commonwealth Classic Friday afternoon. The Classic, which was the first game played in Norfolk between two Major League teams in over 30 years, was played in front of 12,408 fans at Harbor Park.
With the score tied 4-4 in the 8th inning, Orioles shortstop Chris Gomez started the game-winning rally with a single to center off of Nats' reliever Jon Rauch (1-1). J.R. House followed with a single that moved Gomez to third, and one out later Millar connected on a high drive off the left field wall, plating both Gomez and House to give the Orioles the lead.
Baltimore closer Chris Ray yielded a single run in the top of the 9th, but struck out Washington's Chris Snelling with the tying run on third base to pick up his 1st save of the spring.
Nine different Orioles had base hits in the contest, including a solo home run by Corey Patterson in the 5th inning.
Washington's Ryan Zimmerman, who attended Kellam High School in Virginia Beach, had two hits and scored a run in the contest to lead the Nationals offense. Zimmerman doubled and scored in the 5th inning and singled in the 6th.
Cox High School product Jason Dubois doubled and scored in the 6th inning, but had to leave the game an inning later after he came up limping attempting to beat out a double play grounder. Dubois was diagnosed with a strained right hamstring, and will be further evaluated.
John Parrish (1-0) picked up the win in relief for the Orioles, turning in a scoreless 8th inning. O's starter Jaret Wright allowed four runs on three hits in 4.1 innings of work, walking six and striking out two.
Baltimore and Washington will travel to D.C. on Saturday to conclude their pre-season schedule with a 1:05 contest from RFK Stadium.
The Norfolk Tides will be in action for the first time in 2007 on Tuesday night, as they take on the Old Dominion Monarchs in the Bank of the Commonwealth Scholarship Game at Harbor Park. Game time is slated for 7:15 p.m.
The Tides kick off their schedule on Thursday, April 5 against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees in Moosic, PA. Norfolk's home opener is Friday, April 13 at 7:15 p.m. vs. the Louisville Bats.
