Charleston Dirty Birds News Release

CHARLESTON, W. Va. - Benjamin Onyshko struck out a career-high eight batters in relief, but the Rome Braves toppled West Virginia, 7-2, Sunday afternoon at Appalachian Power Park.

Greg Cullen started the scoring for Rome in the first inning, as he laced an RBI single that scored Jose Bermudez from second base and handed the Braves (21-22, 51-61) a 1-0 lead. Evan Johnson (0-2) worked a scoreless second inning, but ran into trouble in the third, as a two-run double down the right-field line off the bat of Griffin Benson extended their lead to 3-0.

Dilmer Mejia (6-2) dominated the Power (20-23, 57-56) order from the first inning on, fanning five batters and surrendering just two hits in his first five innings of work. Rome provided some more run support once in the sixth with three runs on four hits that included a two-run double from Braden Shewmake off Kyle Hill that pushed the Braves lead to 6-0.

Onyshko was called upon to get out of a bases-loaded situation with one out and close out the sixth frame. The southpaw wiggled out of the stanza with a strikeout and lineout that kept the Braves from adding to their lead. West Virginia mustered a pair of base runners in the sixth, but still could not break through, as they ultimately stranded 10 men on base overall. Mejia's day came to a close in the seventh when Jose Montilla (S,4) entered and twirled a scoreless inning to start his outing.

West Virginia finally ended the shutout in the eighth, as Ryan Ramiz singled to lead off the inning and the Power loaded the bases with one out. Jake Anchia sent a ground ball to the left side and plated Ramiz on a fielder's choice, but Shewmake's slick play at shortstop snuffed out a big inning for West Virginia.

Onyshko continued to deal through the next three innings, tallying a career-high eight strikeouts and did not allow a run until the ninth. Onil Pena crushed a solo homer in the bottom of the ninth to slim the deficit to five, but Montilla struck out Julio Rodriguez with runners at the corners to end the game.

The Power continues their four-game series with the Rome Braves Monday night at Appalachian Power Park, with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. RHP Josias De Los Santos (2-6, 5.06 ERA) gets the ball for West Virginia, while Rome sends righty Alan Rangel (9-5, 4.51 ERA) to the bump. Pregame coverage begins at 6:45 p.m. on The Jock 1300 and 1340 AM, as well as online at wvpower.com and via the TuneIn Radio App and MiLB First Pitch App.
