
Drive Fall to Greensboro on Sunday

GREENVILLE, S.C. - The Greenville Drive fell behind early before falling to the Greensboro Grasshoppers, 8-2, on Sunday afternoon at Fluor Field.
Greensboro opened the scoring once again, plating one in the first and three in the second to take an early lead. Jonah Davis opened the game with a solo home run to left, his 12th of the year, to make it a 1-0 game. Four of the first five Greensboro hitters reached in the second, leading to three runs to extend the lead to 4-0.
Greenville answered with two runs in the bottom half of the second. Alan Marrero and Cole Brannen hit back-to-back one-out singles and two batters later Grant Williams tripled to right to score both and make it a 4-2 game.
The Grasshoppers added to their lead with a run in the third, two in the fourth and one more in the sixth. Ji-Hwan Bae singled to lead off the third and later scored on an RBI single by Connor Kaiser. With the bases loaded in the fourth, Bae singled to left to score two and make it a 7-2 lead. An RBI single by Jack Herman scored Justin Harrer in the sixth to push it to 8-2.
Greensboro starter Noe Toribio (1-1) earned the win, allowing two runs on seven hits 5.0 innings pitched with four strikeouts against one walk. Drive starter Chase Shugart (5-3) suffered the loss, allowing seven runs (six earned) on eight hits in 3.1 innings pitched with three strikeouts against two walks.
Tyler Esplin led the Drive offense, going 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles on the afternoon. Four of the Drive's five hits in the game went for extra bases, as Williams added the triple and Brandon Howlett also doubled in the contest. Brendan Nail tossed 2.0 scoreless innings in relief, retiring all six batters he faced, including three via the strikeout.
The series continues on Monday with a 7:05 PM first pitch. Drive right-hander Brayan Bello will take the mound against Greensboro right-hander Steven Jennings.
