Eight-Run First Keys Tourists Sunday 13-6 Win

ASHEVILLE, NC - Asheville scored eight runs in the first inning and cruised to a 13-6 win over the BlueClaws on Sunday at McCormick Field.

Lakewood (18-23/47-64) falls to 2-3 on their seven-game trip while the Tourists 24-19/53-60) won the second game of the series after the BlueClaws won the opener on Saturday.

The Tourists scored eight times in the first inning, seven of which were charged to starter Dominic Pipkin (3-4). Daniel Montano had a two-run double in the inning, in which eight of the first nine Tourist hitters reached base. Omar Maldonado came on for Pipkin but gave up a two-run single for Kyle Datres for the last two runs of the inning.

The eight run first marked the most runs allowed by the BlueClaws in one innings this year and one off the franchise record of nine runs allowed.

After Asheville scored one in the second, Coco Montes keyed a three-run third with his 10th home run of the season to put Asheville up 11-3 before a bases loaded walk to Max George made it 12-3.

All told, Lakewood walked 11 Tourists, tying the most of the year allowed by the BlueClaws. The 11 walks were on one off the franchise record of 12 set in Hagerstown in 2014.

Grant Lavigne reached base in all five plate appearances for Asheville, going 4-4 with a walk. Max George drew three walks for Asheville.

Malvin Matos hit a two-run home run for the BlueClaws in the first inning, one day after he hit two in the series opener. Matos, who is 20 for his last 45, has eight home runs on the season. He added a double and a run scored later in the game.

Asheville starter Frederis Parra (2-1) gave up four runs in five innings to earn the win while Raymells Rosa threw four scoreless inning to earn his first save.

Pipkin gave up seven runs in 1/3 of an inning for Lakewood. Omar Maldonado was charged with two in 1.2 innings. Jhordany Mezquita walked five and gave up four in two innings. Gilmael Troya came on in the sixth and threw three scoreless innings while Andrew Schultz threw a scoreless eighth.

The teams continue their series on Monday night at 7:05 pm. RHP Victor Santos (4-8) starts for Lakewood opposite LHP Nick Bush (5-8).
