Dennis Cook has to be an MVP candidate.
Most valuable? Maybe not. Most versatile? He's got a chance.
Few in hockey will volunteer to sharpen skates, adjust sticks, visit season-ticket holders in the stands, and don a uniform and goalie pads on game day. Yet these are just some of the duties that Cook, a 39-year-old security company manager from Long Beach, has performed for the Reign this season.
"Basically doing anything I can to try and keep (the team) happy.They're great people," Cook said.
"The crowds here are great. I like going out and talking with them. They know I'm just like them. I'm no different."
When starting goalie Curtis Darling was held up at an airport Saturday and couldn't make that night's game in Las Vegas, Cook laced up as the emergency backup for the first time this season. It's a job he performed several times last season for the Reign, and before that for the now-defunct Long Beach Ice Dogs.
But, he insists, "I'm not a player. I'm more, I guess you'd say - a very lucky fan."

All-Star Rosters Announced Wednesday, Thursday Release from the ECHL
The ECHL will announce the rosters for the 2010 ECHL All-Star Game presented by Reebok Hockey and brought to you by Toyota and the City of Ontario on Wednesday and Thursday.
The 2010 ECHL All-Star Game presented by Reebok Hockey and brought to you by Toyota and the City of Ontario will be hosted by the Ontario Reign at Citizens Business Bank Arena and played on Jan. 20, 2010 while the 2010 ECHL All-Star Skills Competition will be held on Jan. 19, 2010.
The 21-man roster for the host National Conference will be announced on Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET and the 21-man roster for the American Conference will be announced at 4 p.m. ET on Thursday.

Reign defenseman Chad Starling chuckled when it was suggested that he might be the Crash Davis of hockey.
But consider: This is a guy who is in his 10th year of chasing pucks professionally. The vast majority has been spent in the ECHL, two steps down from the league where everyone wants to be.
He spent time in Peoria, Utah and Cincinnati before signing with Ontario last year. He's played 556 professional regular-season games, 36 in the American Hockey League and 35 in the lower-tier Central Hockey League. He's had five cups of coffee -- apparently tall, rather than grande or venti -- in NHL training camps since being drafted by the St. Louis Blues in the fourth round in 1999.
Yet he keeps going even as other guys move up, just as the fictional catcher played by Kevin Costner in "Bull Durham" kept riding those Class A buses.

POLICE RAISE MONEY FOR LOCAL CHARITY The Ontario Reign will be hosting the 2nd Annual Police Appreciation Night on Wednesday, January 13th, 2010. The Reign will be taking on the Bakersfield Condors at 7:00pm at Citizens Business Bank Arena.
Come out and join the Reign in honoring the men and women that help protect our communities for only $10. Along with a great price, $4.00 from each ticket sold will go to a local Inland Empire charity.
