Hudson Valley Renegades News Release

Brooklyn, NY - We knew Hudson Valley pitchers couldn't continue pitching shutouts night after night, and needed the offense to step up. On Saturday night, Renegades pitchers saw their scoreless inning streak end but thanks to a timely offense the season-high win streak reached five in a 5-2 over the Brooklyn Cyclones at MCU Park. Hudson Valley's scoreless innings streak was snapped at 24, however Renegades starters did extend their scoreless streak to 29 frames.

Once again, Hudson Valley broke out on top with their lone run in the first inning. Designated hitter Ryan Boldt led off the game with a line-drive single to right, then moved to second on a wild pitch. A groundout by centerfielder Jake Fraley to first moved him to third with one out, however a strikeout by leftfielder Garrett Whitley recorded out number two. That's when first baseman Nate Lowe grounded a single to center to plate Boldt and give the Renegades a 1-0 lead.

However, that would be the only offense for Hudson Valley tonight as the Renegades proceeded to leave six baserunners in scoring position. They had runners at the corners with one out in the third and the bases loaded with one out in the sixth, but failed to score. A double-play ball by Lowe ended the third while a strikeout by shortstop Bill Pujols and groundout from catcher Danny De La Calle ended the threat in the sixth.

After being held to only two hits through six innings, and three hits for the entire series, Brooklyn finally broke through with a two-run seventh on three consecutive hits off of Hudson Valley reliever Porter Clatyon. First baseman Peter Alonso led off the inning with a double, then scored on a triple by third baseman Blake Tiberi. The Cyclones took the lead when catcher Ali Sanchez singled to score Tiberi and give Brooklyn a 2-1 lead.

But has they have done so much of recently, the Renegades would claw back and immediately retake the lead with a four-run eighth. After a fielder's choice put runners at first and second with one out, Pujols lined a single to right to score second baseman Miles Mastrobuoni from second to tie the game and send rightfielder Angel Perez from first to third on the play. With the next hitter standing in, Perez would score on a passed ball to give Hudson Valley a 3-2 lead.

De La Calle followed the passed ball with a triple to right to score Pujols, then scored himself when Boldt singled to right to give the Renegades a 5-2 lead.

That was enough for the Renegades bullpen as Brandon Lawson (2-1) got his second win of the week after striking out two in 2.2 innings to finish the game. He has now struck out eight over his last 5.2 innings of work. The loss went to Brooklyn reliever Adam Atkins (0-1) who allowed four earned runs, on four hits in his only frame.

Hudson Valley starters extended their scoreless innings streak to 29 after righty Jose Alonzo turned in another fine outing, allowing just two hits in five innings to lower his ERA to 0.47.

The Renegades pounded out 13 hits in the game including a 3-5 effort by Boldt who also drove in and scored a run. Mastrobuoni, Pujols, and third baseman Jim Haley also chipped in with two hits apiece. Pujols had an RBI while Mastrobuoni scored a run for Hudson Valley.

Brooklyn was led by Tiberi's 2-4 performance with a triple, RBI and run scored.

Hudson Valley will go for the sweep as they take on Brooklyn in the finale of their three-game series tomorrow at MCU Park. First pitch is slated for 1:00. Righty Spencer Moran (1-1, 2.87 ERA) will pitch for the Renegades against right-hander Merandy Gonzalez (2-0, 2.21 ERA) of the Cyclones. The Renegades will return to Dutchess Stadium on Monday when they open a three-game series against the West Virginia Black Bears. First pitch is slated for 7:05.
