Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

BURLINGTON, VT --- Nate Mondou went 3-for-4 with three RBI and Brendan Butler tossed six solid relief innings as the Vermont Lake Monsters used a five-run first inning to beat the Batavia Muckdogs 8-3 in New York-Penn League action Saturday night at historic Centennial Field.

The Lake Monsters sent nine batters to the plate in the bottom of the first to score their five runs. A Miguel Mercedes sacrifice fly and a run-scoring wild pitch plated the first two runs before Mondou delivered a two-run bases loaded groundball single to centerfield for a 4-0 lead. Luke Persico followed with an RBI single to center of his own to plate the fifth run of the inning.

Batavia got two runs back in the top of the second off Vermont starter Jesus Zambrano, who started in place of Butler due to concerns about rain in the area. Butler did come on in relief of Zambrano to start the fourth inning and pitched the final six innings of the game, allowing just one run (in the ninth inning) on four hits with two walks and six strikeouts. Butler (1-0) and teammate Heath Bowers now have identical 1.04 ERA's overall with both Lake Monster pitchers having given up three earned runs over 26 innings.

After the two runs for Batavia in the second inning, the game stayed 5-2 until the sixth when Mondou lined a two-out single to center, stole second and scored on a Persico RBI single to left. Vermont tacked on two more runs in the eighth inning on three straight singles from Eli White, Sean Murphy and Mondou (for his third RBI) and an RBI forceout for Persico (for his third RBI).

J.J. Gould went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and Isaiah White had two hits for Batavia (5-17), while starter Travis Neubeckk (1-1) was charged with five runs (four earned) in just 1/3 of inning to take the loss. Murphy was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and White also scored a pair of runs for Vermont (12-10), which won its fifth straight home game and have now won four of their last five games overall to move two games over .500 for the first time since June 22, 2014 (when they were 6-4).

The Lake Monsters will look to complete a three-game sweep of the Muckdogs when the two teams close out the series at Centennial Field on Sunday starting at 5:05 pm. The first 650 kids (15 years and younger) will receive a free youth BMX Bike Helmet and all fans can stay after the game to "Have A Catch" in the outfield.
