
Doubledays Lose Second Straight Game to Spikes

The Auburn Doubledays, Single-A Short Season affiliate of the Washington Nationals, lost their second straight game to the State College Spikes, 10-3, on Saturday night. Tres Barrera collected two hits and scored a run for the Doubledays in the loss.
State College (16-6) scored first in the bottom of the second inning off Doubledays left-hander Yonathan Ramirez. With one out, Jeremy Martinez singled. Ricarcdo Bautista then hit a ball to second base, but Jake Noll misplayed the ball to allow Bautista to reach base and Martinez to advance to second base. Josh Swirchak followed with a double to left field to score Martinez and give the Spikes a 1-0 lead. With runners on second and third and one out, Ramirez threw a wild pitch that allowed Bautista to score and Swirchak to advance to third base, giving State College a 2-0 advantage. Danny Hudzina then singled to score Swirchak and extend the Spikes' lead to three, 3-0. Ramirez walked Mick Fennell, which put runners on first and second. Tommy Edman then hit a two-run triple, scoring Hudzina and Fennell for a 5-0 State College lead. Edman scored when Dylan Tice doubled to center field, putting the Spikes up 6-0. With Vince Jackson batting, Ramirez threw another wild pitch, which allowed Tice to move to third base. Ramirez struck out Jackson for the second out of the inning. Auburn right-hander Steven Fuentes then came in to relieve Ramirez. Ryan McCarvel singled off of Fuentes to score Tice and make State College's lead seven, 7-0.
The Spikes scored again in the fourth inning. Edman led off with a double. Edman tagged up and advanced to third base on a Tice fly out to center field. Edman then scored on a Jackson ground out to second base to put State College up 8-0.
State College extended its lead again in the fifth inning. With one out Swirchak singled. Hudzina then walked to put runners on first and second. Fennell followed with a double that scored Swirchak and give the Spikes a 9-0 advantage.
The Doubledays (12-9) got on the board in the top of the sixth inning. Tres Barrera doubled to lead off the inning. Oliver Ortiz then walked to put runners on first and second with no outs. Barrera tagged up and advanced to third base on a Jake Noll fly out to right field. Jack Sundberg followed with a sacrifice fly out to center field, which scored Barrera to cut State College's lead to eight, 9-1.
The Spikes responded in the bottom of the sixth inning. With one out, Ryan McCarvel hit a solo home run just to the right of straightaway-center field to extend State College's lead back to nine, 10-1.
Auburn scored again in the top of the seventh inning. With one out, Darryl Florentino came in to pinch hit and walked. Nick Banks then tripled in the right-center field gap, scoring Florentino to cut the deficit to eight, 10-2. Andres Martinez then pinch hit and hit a sacrifice fly out to right field to score Banks and cut State College's lead to seven, 10-3.
The Doubledays and the Spikes conclude a three-game series Sunday night from State College. Right-hander Weston Davis will take the mound for Auburn against State College right-hander Steven Farinaro.
