Tigers Win Rain Shortened Affair, 9-2

LOWELL- MASS - The Connecticut Tigers (15-7) won a rain shortened game against the Lowell Spinners (13-9) 9-2 on Saturday night. The game was called due to rain in the bottom of the sixth inning. Alfred Gutierrez gets his first win of the season for the Tigers.

The Tigers got the bats going in the first inning with four hits, resulting in a pair of runs. Josh Lester and Tanner Donnels (2-4, 3 RBI) each connected on RBI singles off of Lowell starter Darwinzun Hernandez. Hernandez struggled giving up the four hits, a walk and hit a batter. Daniel Zandona came out of the pen for the Spinners to strand the bases loaded with back-to-back strikeouts.

The Tigers added to their 2-0 lead in the second courtesy of Daniel Pinero (1-2, RBI, R. In his Connecticut debut, Piniero lifted a sac-fly to centerfield to score Austin Athmann (2-3, 2R) from third.

Gutierrez took advantage of the run support, pitching five innings to earn his first win of the year. Gutierrez allowed eight hits but only gave up two runs on the hill.

In the fifth Connecticut was able to pile on against the Spinners bullpen. Leading 3-1, Joey Havrilak (2-3, 3R, RBI) roped an RBI double into the gap in right centerfield, Pinero came around to score from first. Tanner Donnels continued his dominant series at the plate with a two-run single out to right field. For Donnels, it was his fourth hit of the series and fourth RBI as well.

Along with Donnels, four other Tigers racked up multi-hit performances (Havrilak, Athmann, Machonis, Lester). Josh Lester (2-3, R, 2RBI) contributed two more RBI's tonight, making it four runs driven in this series.

The Tigers finished their scoring in the sixth inning against Joe Kelly, who is on rehab assignment for the Red Sox. The Tigers racked up four hits and scored two additional runs against the right-hander. Josh Lester and Sam Machonis (2-3, R, RBI) both recorded RBI singles against Kelly.

With the win the Tigers win their season-high fifth game in a row and notch their fourth-straight series win. The Tigers go for their second consecutive sweep, tomorrow at 5:05 p.m.
