Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

(Charleston-SC)- Dustin Yount had four hits and drove in four runs as the Delmarva Shorebirds exploded for a season high in runs and hits, downing the RiverDogs 14-5 at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park Thursday, taking three of four from Charleston.

The Shorebirds (21-19) pounded out 19 hits and led the entire way, though the RiverDogs (22-15) had their chances.

Trailing 5-4 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Wes Bankston lined a Richard Salazar fastball off the wall in left-centerfield. Brent Cordell, on at first following an RBI single, raced around the bases as fast as he could with a broken bone in his right foot, but was thrown out at home plate, ending the inning.

Delmarva scored five times in the top of the sixth to put the game away.

Charleston has now lost three straight at home for the second time this season.

All nine starters for Delmarva had at least one hit, including Rafael Diaz who was 3-for-6 with 2 RBI. Infielder Bryan Bass had a double and a triple for the Shorebirds in the only series between the two teams in 2003.

Vince Harrison had two hits for Charleston. Cordell and Shawn Riggans each had a pair of runs batted in.

Richard Salazar (3-1) pitched four innings in relief for the Shorebirds to pick up the win. Nick DeBarr (3-1), making his first start of the season allowed six hits and five runs, two earned, in four innings of work for the RiverDogs.

Charleston begins a four-game series Friday with Buddy Biancalana's Lakewood BlueClaws. Biancalana managed the RiverDogs in 2001 and 2002 before signing with the Philadelphia Phillies organization this past offseason.

Brian Bulger (3-1) will make the start for Charleston. He will be opposed by Lee Gwaltney (3-3) for Lakewood. Sprint Friday Fireworks will follow the game and members of renowned Circus Flora will be on hand including the world famous Flying Wallendas.

Game time is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
