25 YEARS OF SOUNDS BASEBALL: The Tennessean recently put together a package celebrating the first 25 years of Nashville Sounds baseball. Visit www.nashvillesounds.com for a list of links.
POWER OUTAGE: Nashville batters have logged 186 consecutive homerless at-bats (47 innings) and have hit just one longball in 232 AB this homestand (seven games). The Sounds are tied for 14th among 16 league clubs with 99 home runs on the year.
SECRIST STEPPING IT UP: Utilityman Reed Secrist has hit safely in a season-best six straight games (9-for-18, .500, 9 R, 5 RBI) to increase his average to .263, its highest point since late June.
SEE YOU IN SEPTEMBER?: The Sounds are trying to end a seven-year playoff drought. Nashville has not made a post-season appearance since 1994, when they finished 83-61 and advanced to the American Association finals (lost 3-1 to Indianapolis). Nashville last won a division crown in 1993 (American Assoc. East, 81-62).
MAKING THEIR PITCH: Nashville hurlers have posted a 2.76 ERA (57er/186.1ip) over the team's last 21 games. Nashville's current 3.94 ERA ranks 2nd among PCL clubs (New Orleans, 3.26). The Sounds pace the Pacific Coast League with 999 strikeouts (27 K more than 2nd-ranked Oklahoma & Salt Lake's 972) and have issued the fewest walks (327) among all PCL teams. Nashville is just 43 punchouts shy of the all-time franchise record (1,042, set in 1998).
SETTING THE TABLE: Over the past 12 games, the Sounds 1 & 2 hitters (Tike Redman, Adrian Brown, Curtis Pride) are batting a combined .326 (31-for-95) with 19 runs scored and 11 RBI. They've also swiped 12 bags over that span.
A.B. ON THE BALL: Outfielder Adrian Brown is batting .403 (52-for-129) over his last 35 games and holds the Sounds' longest active hitting streak at eight games (12-for-31, .387). He has logged an impressive .380 batting average in 38 games with Nashville.
COTA EN FUEGO: Catcher Humberto Cota is batting .328 (44-for-134) in his last 35 games and has posted multiple-hit efforts in six of his last 12 contests (19-for-46, .413). He batted just .222 (52-for-234) over his first 73 games this season.
HOT LEATHER: Nashville fielders currently share the top fielding mark in the PCL (.980). The highest fielding percentage ever recorded by a Sounds club over a complete season is .976 by the 1992 squad.
SMOKIN' SALOMON: Nashville right-hander Salomon Torres turned in his best outing of the season on Monday night against Omaha. His one-hitter was Nashville's first since Bronson Arroyo's on July 22, 2001 vs. Portland. Torres' 14 strikeouts in the contest rank as the second-highest punchout total by a PCL pitcher this season (Edmonton's Johan Santana logged 16 Ks on April 29 vs. New Orleans). Torres was one strikeout short of the team record of 15, held by both Jamie Werly (8/28/81 vs. Charlotte) and Luis Vasquez (6/29/89 vs. Columbus). Following Monday night's effort, Torres jumped to 2nd among PCL hurlers with 126 strikeouts and 9th in the circuit with a 3.70 ERA. Torres logged Nashville's fourth nine-inning complete-game shutout on the year, joining Brian Meadows, Tony McKnight, and Bronson Arroyo in accomplishing the feat.
LOONEY ACTIVATED: Left-hander Brian Looney has been activated from the disabled list after missing a week of action due to a left ankle sprain. He has posted an 0-1 record and 7.56 ERA (7er/8.1ip) in two starts for the Sounds since joining the club from Double-A Altoona on August 2. Looney fills the active roster spot vacated when Al Reyes was promoted to Pittsburgh on Friday.
SOUND BYTES: The Sounds have won four straight and seven of their last eight against Memphis ... Nashville is 12-13 in games started by Tony McKnight ... Tike Redman is batting .326 (28-for-86) in his last 19 games ... Armando Romero is batting .412 (7-for-17) over his last six games ... Curtis Pride has 24 hits in his last 74 AB (.324) ... Luis Garcia has hit safely in five straight games and has seven hits in 17 AB in August (.412 average) ... Chris Pritchett's second-inning triple on Tuesday snapped a 14 at-bat hitless stretch and is his lone knock in his last 17 AB (.059) ... The Sounds have gotten on the board early this year, scoring 42 percent of their runs (254 of 605) in the first three innings ... Catcher Humberto Cota has allowed 15 thefts in the last 17 attempts against him ... Mendy Lopez, the Sounds' RBI leader (66), is hitless in his last 17 at-bats after recording 11 knocks in his previous 22 AB.
