Portland Beavers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - RHP Adam Eaton made an impressive first rehabilitation start for Portland Thursday night.
And he had quite an audience.
Despite allowing two home runs, Eaton, who underwent "Tommy John" ligament replacement surgery on Aug. 21, 2001, struck out four and walked none in 7.1 innings to get the win as the Beavers (66-65) defeated the Stingers 7-2 in front of a season-high 13,990 at PGE Park.
The Beaver offense provided enough of a cushion for Eaton during a four-run second in which Portland sent eight men to the plate. Overall, the Beavers rapped out eight hits, highlighted by 3B Sean Burrough's two-hit performance.
In fact, every Portland batter except for DH Kevin Eberwein reached base at least once. CF Kory DeHaan had two RBIs and C Brian Loyd crossed the plate twice.
Salt Lake (73-60) threatened in the eighth, pushing two runs across against Eaton and LHP Eric Cyr. 2B Jose Nieves began the inning with a home run to left and 1B Rick Short singled in his 57th run of the season, but Cyr shut down the rally with two straight outs.
RHP Matt Hensley was roughed up early by the Portland offense and was charged with his fifth loss of the season.
Despite the win, the Beavers were mathematically eliminated from the North Division race as Edmonton defeated Tacoma, 5-4. The Trappers are now assured of participating in the 2002 Pacific Coast League playoffs.
RHP John Snyder (6-11, 3.83 ERA) goes for Portland Friday against RHP Mickey Callaway (9-2, 1.68). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. PST.
