Omaha Lancers News Release
OMAHA, NE. - The Lancers were looking to bounce back tonight (12/18) after taking a loss against the Des Moines Buccaneers by a score of 5-1 the night before.
The Lancers came out harder than ever right off the opening puck drop.
Just 56 seconds in, Cade Ahrenholz found Owen Fowler, who then fed the puck to Matt Basgall who netted the first goal of the night. Giving Basgall his third goal of the season, making the score 1-0.
That was then followed up half a period later as the Lancers' captain Cam Mitchell netted his fifth goal of the season, making it 2-0 with 8:38 left in the first.
With just under two minutes left in the first, the Lancers found themselves on the power-play for the first time. After a high sticking penalty from Sully Scholle put the Lancers up a man.
Just over a minute of power-play hockey later, Fowler found Basgall at the point, who then connected a pass to Jared Wright in the slot. Wright hacked at the puck a few times before sneaking it in the bottom corner of the net, making it a 3-0 game heading into the first intermission.
The second period consisted of slow paced hockey from both teams.
The Bucs and Lancers had decent puck movement, but lacked in shots on goal. As the Lancers lead 6-4 in second period shots.
2:17 into the third period, Vincent Salice netted his fifth goal of the year and his first against his former team. With assists coming from Nolan Hayes and Matt Romer, the Lancers were up 4-0 with 17:43 remaining.
Tanner Latcsh of Des Moines struck back just 31 seconds later and beat goaltender, Tommy Heaney over the glove hand, cutting the lead back to three with the majority of the third period left to play.
Just under two minutes later, Fowler snuck one in short-side on Buccaneer goaltender, Lucas Szyszka, boosting the lead back to 5-1 in favor of Omaha. Hayes and Morgan Winters picked up assists on that one, giving Hayes his second assist on the night, and Fowler his third point, as the Lancers took the 5-1 win.
This win moves the Lancers into third place in the western conference, as the Des Moines Buccaneers fall back into last place with the Sioux Falls Stampede taking the win over the Lincoln Stars.
The Lancers will be back in action on December 28th as they head to Sioux Falls to take on the Stampede. That game can be caught on Mixlr and HockeyTV.
