Fighting Saints Enter Holiday Break Victorious

MIDDLETON, Wis. - The Dubuque Fighting Saints got the best Christmas gift of all- a win heading into the holiday break. Down 3-2 heading into the third period, Mikey Burchill tied the game up early, and Connor Kurth added the dagger to throw the reversal. The Fighting Saints defeated the Madison Capitols 4-3 on Saturday night at Bob Suter's Capitol Ice.

The top line jumped on two opportunities to score and made no mistake. Stephen Halliday's pinpoint pass to the slot found Burchill who ripped a one-time shot past Arthur Smith's blocker to tie the game at three. Just four and a half minutes later, it was Kurth who bum-rushed the front of the net and converted on his own rebound to give the Fighting Saints a 4-3 lead.

Dubuque's puck pressure kept the puck in the Madison zone with less than a minute to go until Smith could head to the bench for the extra attacker. The Saints forced a stoppage of play with 0.4 seconds remaining and held on after the following faceoff to cement the win. The win was the Fighting Saints' ninth in the last ten games.

Paxton Geisel's personal winning streak hit nine at the same time with a 27 save effort on Saturday night.

Both teams staked out to a wild start. Madison struck for the opening tally and held an 8-2-1 mark when they scored the first goal this season. Luke Mittelstadt opened the scoring at 12:53 of the first period on the power play. Special teams dictated the pace of the first period. The Fighting Saints returned fire with two goals on the power play of their own.

Tristan Lemyre scored his fourth goal of the weekend as the Capitols failed to clear the zone. William Hallén kept the puck in on the near wall and feathered a pass to Lemyre in the bumper position to give the Québecois forward his 15th goal of the season.

Halliday spotted Montes on the back door just two minutes later on the back end of a double minor power play. Montes, from Verona, Wis., scored a goal in front of his family who was in attendance. Madison wiped that lead away almost immediately with a goal from Nicholas Wallace.

Madison re-took the lead in the second period, which was played completely at five-on-five. Severo added a tally on a bouncing biscuit in front of Geisel.

The Capitols outshot Dubuque 30-28 for the game.

The Dubuque Fighting Saints will enjoy the holiday break and return to action on Monday, December 27 at Cedar Rapids.
