Oklahoma City Comets News Release
TWO FOR TUESDAY: Monday's game between the RedHawks and Royals was postponed due to rain and will be made as part of a doubleheader today. It will mark the fourth doubleheader this season between Oklahoma and Omaha. The May 29 tilt at Rosenblatt Stadium was postponed due to the threat of severe weather and made up as a doubleheader on May 30. The June 27 game was postponed due to a power outage following a storm in Omaha and made up on June 29, one day after a scheduled twinbill.
PITCHER OF THE WEEK: Brandon McCarthy was honored as the PCL Pitcher of the Week for his efforts from August 10 through 17. McCarthy went 1-0 and did not allow a run over 13 innings during that span, striking out 11 and walking two. McCarthy began the season on the Rangers disabled list and made several rehab appearances for Oklahoma before getting activated and optioned to the RedHawks on August 9.
13 STRAIGHT:
Ryan Roberts extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a single in the fifth Sunday night. Roberts current run surpasses Jason Ellison and Nate Gold's 12 game streaks as the third longest by any RedHawk this season, one shy of Chris Davis' 14 game streak in June and two behind Nelson Cruz and Taylor Teagarden's 15 game streaks.
MENDOZA ENTERS ROTATION:
Texas optioned Luis Mendoza to the RedHawks on Friday when Kevin Millwood was activated from the disabled list. Mendoza was recalled for his second stint with Texas on June 20 and went 3-4 with a 7.86 earned run average for the Rangers over 11 games, including eight starts. Overall this season, the right-hander has a 3-6 record for Texas with an ERA of 8.16.
ARIAS GOES BIG LEAGUE:
Joaquin Arias was recalled by Texas on Monday. The infielder hit .296 with seven home runs and 49 runs batted in for Oklahoma this season over 104 games, including 44 at his natural position of shortstop. Arias, a member of the 40-man roster, had a shoulder surgery last year that cost him most of the season.
ROUND THREE IN "08:
Oklahoma will face off against Brandon Duckworth for the third time this season. The RedHawks have tallied five runs off Duckworth, four earned, over 12.1 innings. Duckworth is 0-2 against Oklahoma this season and holds a 2.93 earned run average this year, and is 0-4 in four starts against the RedHawks in his career with a 3.52 ERA.
OMAHA AT A GLANCE:
Today's twinbill is the 12th of the season for the Royals. Omaha is 6-16 this season on doubleheader days... Losses in the first two games of this series have dropped the Royals to 4-13 during the month of August. Omaha is also just one loss shy of losing their 12th straight series.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION:
Texas lost 8-7 to Detroit... Frisco beat Northwest Arkansas 6-1... Bakersfield edged Stockton 3-1... Clinton blew a four run lead in a 6-5 loss at Peoria... Spokane rallied to beat Salem-Keizer 4-3.
DOT-DOT-DOT:
Oklahoma's magic number is 6. Any combination of RedHawk wins and New Orleans losses that add up to six will clinch the American South Division... The RedHawks will play their sixth doubleheader of the year today. Oklahoma is 5-5 thus far this year when playing twice in one day, having swept one twinbill, lost one, and split the other three... Adam Fox was promoted to the RedHawks earlier today from Frisco.
ON THE AIR:
Every game this season can be heard on the RedHawks Radio Network, led by broadcaster Jim Byers for the ninth season, and joined by Adam Marco during each homestand.
