Oklahoma City Comets News Release

LAST GAME: The RedHawks tallied two first inning runs and three in the third to build up an early lead for spot starter Brian Gordon, who pitched five plus solid innings in Oklahoma's 6-0 victory over Round Rock. Chris Shelton drove in the first five runs of the game with a single and a three-run home run. John Mayberry hit a solo shot in the eighth to cap the scoring. Gordon allowed five hits scattered over five and two-thirds innings, and combined with Wes Littleton, Bill White, and Brandon Puffer for the shutout.

SHUTOUT STUFF: Oklahoma's combined shutout last night was its six of the season, and fourth to come by a 6-0 final score. Brian Gordon was on the bump earlier this week in the RedHawks 4-0 win over Albuquerque at the Brick. In those six shutout wins, the RedHawks offense has provided 30 runs of support.

FIVE SPOT: Chris Shelton became the second RedHawk this season to drive in five runs in a single game last night. Nelson Cruz drove in five on June 23 against Round Rock at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma's 9-4 victory. Shelton now has 24 runs batted in 21 games, averaging 1.14 RBI per game, a rate better than All-Star Nelson Cruz (0.88).

HYATT TO START: Jared Hyatt will make his first-ever Triple-A start tonight. Hyatt was in line to start last Wednesday against Albuquerque, but travel complications caused him to get to the ballpark after the 11:05 am first pitch. Hyatt was promoted from Bakersfield last week, having made 18 appearances, including 12 starts, with a 6-5 record and a 3.92 ERA for the Class-A club. Hyatt was taken in the 33rd round of the 2007 draft after five years (four seasons) at Georgia Tech.

ALL-STAR DEPARTS: Nelson Cruz left the club earlier today to head to Louisville for the Triple-A All-Star Game. Cruz was elected as a starter for the second time in his career, having also started in 2006 at Sacramento as member of the Nashville Sounds prior to the trade that brought him to the Rangers organization. The RedHawks outfielder is making the trip alone, however, as teammate Joaquin Arias opted not to travel to Kentucky. Arias was selected as a reserve infielder to replace Fresno's Ivan Ochoa last week, but will instead take the time off to rest his arms. Arias had right shoulder surgery last year, and was hit on the left arm by a Runelvys Hernandez pitch on Saturday, forcing him out of the lineup after one full inning that night and was entirely out yesterday.

REDHAWKS ON THE TUBE: Tonight's will be televised in the Oklahoma City area on FSN Southwest. The program will start at 7 pm. It will be the first RedHawks road game ever broadcast back to the metropolitan area. Jim Byers will handle to play-by-play duties for the broadcast.

ROUND ROCK AT A GLANCE: Jack Cassel will start tonight for the Express, but will be on a pitch count and be piggybacked by Chad Reineke. Cassel is recovering from back problems that forced him to the Round Rock disabled list on June 20... Round Rock is outhitting Oklahoma in this series .219 (21-96) to .202 (19-94), but have been outscored 16-11... The Express have lost six of eight since their eight-game winning streak ended on July 5.

DOT-DOT-DOT: Oklahoma has hit six home runs during this series at The Dell Diamond with two long balls in each game so far... The RedHawks have allowed just two earned runs since the end of the third inning Friday night and hold an team ERA of 0.78 since that moment in time. Including the first three innings of the series, the staff ERA is 2.42 (7 ER over 26.0 IP)... Oklahoma has walked a total of 14 times during the first three games of the series... With last night's win, the RedHawks have guaranteed at least a split of the season series with the Express. Oklahoma won the 2007 season series 8-7... The RedHawks are 12 games over .500 for the first time all season...
