LAST NIGHT: The RedHawks received a strong pitching performance from Luis Mendoza to beat Nashville 6-1. Mendoza, with Oklahoma on a rehab assignment, pitched into the eighth inning and allowed one run on seven hits while walking none and striking out two. The six-seven-eight-nine batters did the damage offensively for the RedHawks, led by Kevin Mench and Brandon Boggs. The pair combined for four extra base hits and four of the six Oklahoma runs. Ryan Roberts and Casey Benjamin each drove in a run, as the RedHawks took the first game of the four-game set.
A MODEST STREAK: Kevin Mench has played in every RedHawk game this season and has reached by base hit in each of his last four games. The former Delaware Blue Hen started the 2007 season with a five game streak while playing for the Milwaukee Brewers. His longest streak of the season was seven games from July 3 to July 20.
ON THE BUMP: Eric Hurley makes his second start of the season this evening. The right-hander struck out seven Redbirds over five innings on opening night and heads into his second appearance just four K's off the league lead. Portland's Wade LeBlanc struck out 11 last night in the Beavers 9-1 win at home against Sacramento.
ANOTHER SOUTHPAW: The Sounds will throw a left-hander against Oklahoma for the second consecutive day. The RedHawks are hitting .250 against lefties this season, with 12 hits in 48 at bats with two home runs and nine strikeouts.
TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALLGAME: After five home games, the RedHawks lead the Pacific Coast League in attendance, drawing an average 7,429 per contest. Oklahoma averaged 7,567 per game over 70 home dates in 2007.
NASHVILLE AT A GLANCE: Hernan Iribarren extends his hitting streak to four game with a leadoff single in the first inning. Iribarren has started four the five Sounds games and came on as a pinch hitter in Sunday's win at New Orleans. The outfielder walked in that at bat, thus putting him on base in each game this season, the lone Nashville player with that distinction... Former Ranger and RedHawk Laynce Nix is leading the Sounds with a .350 average after five games. Nix patrolled the Oklahoma outfield during portions of the 2005 and 2006 seasons... Nashville is hitting .261 as a team, the 11th best average in the 16 team league.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Texas was idle on Monday and hosted Baltimore earlier today in the home opener... Frisco shutout Arkansas 8-0... Bakersfield beat Stockton 9-0... Clinton trounced Wisconsin 8-1. Add in the RedHawks 6-1 win, and the Rangers minor league system went 4-0 yesterday and outscored opponents 31-2.
DOT-DOT-DOT: The RedHawks team ERA dropped with yesterday's pitching performance. The RedHawks now hold the fifth lowest team ERA, trailing only Salt Lake, Portland, Memphis, and New Orleans... The team batting average , however, is the third lowest in the league. The .228 mark is just ahead of Tacoma and Sacramento... RedHawks skipper Bobby Jones is now six wins shy of 500 in his Oklahoma City managerial career. Jones spent two seasons at the helm of the 89ers in the mid-ninties, and is in his second stint as the manager of the RedHawks...
ON THE AIR: Every game this season can be heard on the RedHawks Radio Network, led by broadcaster Jim Byers for the ninth season, and joined by Adam Marco during each homestand. Fox Sports Radio AM 1340 in Oklahoma City will serve as the flagship station in 2008. The network affiliates this season are KSIW 1450 AM in Woodward, KXCA 1380 AM in Lawton, KPNS 1350 AM in Duncan, KTJS 1420 AM in Hobart, KGFF 1450 AM in Shawnee, and KWSH 1260 AM in Wewoka.
