Tucson Sidewinders News Release
Tucson, AZ - Randy Johnson's six innings of 3-run ball wasn't enough to end the Sidewinders four-game losing streak, as the bullpen gave up six runs in the 9-7 loss. Johnson, making his second consecutive start in a Sidewinder uniform, went six innings giving up three runs on three hits and a walk. He struck out seven in the outing and threw 85 pitches, 58 for strikes.
Despite the loss, the Sidewinders did score six of their runs off of season high four homeruns by four different players.
The Bees struck first in the second inning on a pair of doubles off of Johnson to take the early 1-0 lead.
The Sidewinders came back to tie in the second due to a Josh Whitesell lead off homerun.
Salt Lake went back on top in the 3rd when Sean Rodriguez walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and came all the way home from second base on another wild offering by Johnson.
Brandon Wood added to the lead when he hit a solo homerun to center, his second on the year.
The Sidewinders tied the game in the 5th from a Matt Morgan solo home run and a Tim Raines Jr. RBI single to center that scored Trent Oeltjen from second, evening score at 3-3.
In the 6th Donnie Kelly hit a shot over the right field fence that scored two runs putting Tucson up 5-3, but the Sidewinders bullpen woes continued when Connor Robertson and Leo Rosales combined to allow the next six runs in three innings of work.
Tucson reliever Connor Robertson came in the 8th and gave up the lead allowing Kendry Morales to hit a three run homer to left. The 9th inning started like the 8th where Sidewinder pitcher Leo Rosales comes in and gives up another 3-run homer to Sean Rodriguez.
Tucson came back in the bottom of the 9th due to a Tim Raines, Jr. 2-run homer, but it wasn't enough to end the losing streak. Raines, Jr. finished the game 5-for-5 with a run, double, home run and 3 RBI.
The Sidewinders will face the Bees for game three of the four game series starting at 6:30 PM on Wednesday night. RHP Billy Buckner (0-0, 11.25) is scheduled to start the first game for Tucson. Right-hander Nick Adenhart (1-0, 0.00) will take the mound for Salt Lake. The game will air live on COOL 1450 beginning at 6:15 p.m.
