Oilers Vs. Brahmas
October 29, 2004 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Tulsa Oilers News Release
The Tulsa Oilers are 2-1, in first place, and have been getting contributions from some of the unlikeliest of places.
Showing up, in some cases literally, right before game time, Jaroslav Cesky has 4 points (3 g, 1 a), Josh Akright has a goal and an assist in 2 games, Tyler Scott is +2, and goalie Bill Ruggiero is 2-0 in his first 2 starts.
Through it all, an old standby, Chris Page is a little overshadowed by the roster movement. The Central Hockey League recognized his 5 points (2 g, 3 a) by naming him one of their Metal Blade Power Players.
Tonight, the Oilers take on their 3rd Divisional opponent of the year, and 3rd in a row in the Fort Worth Brahmas. Fort Worth is 0-1-1 so far but do boast the first National Hockey League player signed by a CHL team this season in defenseman Brad Lukowich. Lukowich is -1 with a goal this season, but does have 2 Stanley Cups on his resume, including being part of last year's Tampa Bay championship team.
Last season, the Oilers and the Brahmas met only twice with each team winning once. Despite not seeing each other very often, these teams made their time together memorable. On March 13th Oilers forward Doug Pirnak had 80 penalty minutes against Fort Worth, a CHL record. Pirnak is still serving the 6 game suspension he received after that night. One of his opponents that night, Scott English, is now one of his teammates and one of only 4 defenseman coach Butch Kaebel will play tonight.
On the Fort Worth side of the ice, Nick Udovicic will lace it up for the first time against his former team. Acquired from Tulsa this summer in a trade for English, Udovicic had 3 points (1 g, 2 a) in 14 games for the Oilers last season... this season he has no points and is -1, English has played in just 1 game and has 19 penalty minutes.
Another familiar face back on Tulsa ice will be Jorin Welsh. After playing in the WHA2 last season (teammates with injured Oiler Jason Renard) Welsh returns to the CHL. As a defenseman for Tulsa, Welsh played 4 seasons averaging 36 points a year, his best season coming in 2000-01 when he had 30 goals and 20 assists. The Oilers are only 5 games away from competing in their 800th all-time.
Their record since 1992: 386-338-71.
