Corpus Christi IceRays News Release

New Mexico Scorpions goaltender, Miguel Beaudy made 40 saves and Mike Oliveira scored two goals in the second period to lead the New Mexico Scorpions to a 2-1 win over the Corpus Christi Rayz Friday night in New Mexico.

It was Frank Bowl IV Friday night at the Tingley Coliseum in Albuquerque, as the Rayz and Scorpions met for the first time this season and the fourth time since Doug Frank took control of the Rayz. On Friday night, as the Scorpions were playing their first game at home on the young season, it was the Rayz who came out and controlled the pace early on. The Rayz outshot the Scorpions 15-5 in the opening frame and spent the majority of the period in the New Mexico zone peppering Scorpions goaltender, Miguel Beaudry from all angles. Beaudry was brilliant, keeping it a scoreless game through the first period. Not to be outdone, Rayz netminder, Brent Zelenewich turned in a solid first period effort as well, stopping three point-blank chances, including a shorthanded breakaway on Mike Oliveira.

In the second period, the Scorpions came out of the gate and forced the issue right from the opening faceoff, and didn't stop all period long. Mike Oliveira got a pair of goals 1:39 apart. His got his first goal on the power play, after the Rayz were unable to clear to the puck and Oliveira was left alone in the slot. Tic-tac-toe passing left Oliveira with a one-timer from between the circles that just snuck through the pads of Zelenewich. Just 1:39 later, Oliveira broke behind the Rayz defense and took a headman pass from Randy Murphy. He moved in one on one against Zelenewich and put the puck upstairs for his second goal of the game. The Scoprions went into the second intermission leading 2-0.

In the third, the Rayz went right back to their pressured style of play and were all over the Scorpions, outshooting them 18-6 in that period. The Rayz finally got one past Beaudry at the 11:11 mark when Ryan Carter scored in his second straight game on the fourth rebound effort that snuck up and over the pads of Beaudry, cutting the Scorpions lead to 2-1. The Rayz only got stronger after that, however Beaudry single handedly closed the door and led the Scorpions to their second victory of the season with a 2-1 win. Beaudry made 40 saves to earn him the #1 star of the game. The Rayz fell to 0-2-1 on the season, while the Scorpions improved to 2-1. The Rayz outshot New Mexico 41-26. Corpus Christi went 0-5 on the power play and New Mexico went 1-6. The Rayz will conclude their season-long, four-game road trip tomorrow night in Colorado with their lone visit to play the Eagles this season. The game will begin at 8:05pm CST.

Then the Rayz will return for Corpus Christi when they open up the AmeircanBank Center on Friday November 5th versus the Laredo Bucks. Tickets are available at all ticket master locations and start as low as $10. For more information, call (361)814-PUCK.
