
Oil Kings to Face Seattle Thunderbirds in WHL Championship Series

Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings will faceoff against the Seattle Thunderbirds in the 2022 WHL Championship Series, which will begin this Friday night at Rogers Place.
The Oil Kings are making their fourth appearance in the league final after previous appearances in 2012, 2013 and 2014. In 2012 and 2014 the Oil Kings won the Ed Chynoweth Cup with victories over the Portland Winterhawks both years.
During the 2022 WHL post-season, the Oil Kings have compiled a record of 12-1 after sweeping the Lethbridge Hurricanes and Red Deer Rebels in the opening two rounds of the playoffs before defeating the Winning ICE in five games in the Eastern Conference Championship Series.
For the Thunderbirds, this will also be their fourth appearance in the league final after previous appearances in 2017, 2016 and 1997. The Thunderbirds defeated the Regina Pats in the 2017 league final to claim the Ed Chynoweth Cup for their first time in their franchise history.
The Thunderbirds have gone 12-7 in the WHL Playoffs after beating the Kelowna Rockets in five games in round one, erasing a 3-1 series deficit against the Portland Winterhawks in round two to win in seven games and winning a thrilling seven game series over the Kamloops Blazers in the Western Conference Championship.
The Oil Kings will have home-ice advantage in the 2022 WHL Championship Series. Due to building availability in Seattle, the series will be played in a 2-2-3 format with five of the seven games to be played at Rogers Place.
