Oil Kings Thumped by Warriors

Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings (27-10-2-1) saw their 15-game home winning streak come crashing to an end on Tuesday night as they were handed an 8-1 defeat by the visiting Moose Jaw Warriors (21-16-3-1) at Rogers Place.

The Warriors, who were playing their third game in four nights, came out with plenty of jump in the opening frame in ICE District and were able to draw an early power play that would lead to the game's icebreaker.

Moose Jaw worked the puck masterfully around the offensive zone on the man-advantage, eventually opening up their captain Daemon Hunt for a one-timer from the left side of the blueline that he was able to blast past Sebastian Cossa at 3:47 of the first period.

The Warriors extended their lead just before the halfway mark of the opening frame as their leading goal scorer, Jagger Firkus, was able to jump on a turned over puck right in front of the Edmonton net and sweep home his 25th goal of the season.

The Warriors had several chances late in the first period to try and push their lead to three but Cossa came up with a handful of big saves, with his best coming after he flashed the leather on Firkus on a breakaway to keep Edmonton within two at the first intermission.

The Oil Kings were able to gain momentum to start the second period after they killed off a lengthy Moose Jaw five-on-three power play and at 5:43 of the period, Dylan Guenther scored his team-leading 22nd goal of the year to bring Edmonton within one. Just after an Oil Kings power play expired, Josh Williams found Guenther in the left-wing circle with a pass where the Arizona Coyotes prospect looked as if he was thinking pass himself, but instead let fly a no-look wrist shot that squeaked through the arm and body of Warriors goaltender Carl Tetachuk.

The Oil Kings would not hold the momentum for long as just over four minutes later, the Warriors restored their two-goal advantage after Firkus setup Brayden Yager in the right-wing circle where he lasered a shot top-shelf.

Yager added his second goal of the period with 4:27 left in the middle stanza as he jumped on a rebound at the side of the Edmonton net on a Moose Jaw power play to send the Warriors to the intermission with a 4-1 lead.

The Warriors continued to pile on early in the third period as Atley Calvert and Majid Kaddoura each scored a goal just 13 seconds apart in the opening 2:30 to stretch the visitors lead to five.

Calvert would add his second of the period just past the midway mark, while rookie Thomas Tien rounded out the scoring in the final five minutes of the game to give Moose Jaw the 8-1 decision.

Cossa finished the night making 17 saves on 21 shots through 40 minutes of action, while Kolby Hay made six saves in relief. The Oil Kings went zero-for-four on the power play, the Warriors were two-for-six.

Next up, the Oil Kings continue their five-game homestand as they welcome the Swift Current Broncos to town for Star Wars Night this Saturday, January 29 at 7:00 PM.
