Oil Kings Take 5-2 Win over Blazers

December 13, 2012 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Edmonton Oil Kings News Release

Edmonton, AB - Tristan Jarry posted an impressive 37 save performance to help lead the Oil Kings to a 5-2 win over the WHL leading Kamloops Blazers on Wednesday. Henrik Samuelsson notched two third period goals including the game winner as the Kings moved a point back of the Hitmen for first in the Central division.

Curtis Lazar tallied his sixth goal in his last five games to open the scoring for the Kings seven minutes in. Edmonton managed to get the puck out from along the half wall as Cody Corbett sent Lazar in on a breakaway. Lazar made no mistake finishing the power play goal with a nice move and a shot off the glove of Kamloops goaltender Cole Cheveldave. The Oil Kings number one ranked power play has tallied on it's first opportunity of the night in back to back games. The Kings power play went 1 for 5 and continues to lead the WHL with a 27.0% success rate.

During a series of successful penalty kills Jarry put on a show as the Blazers out shot the Kings 25-9 in the second period. The continued pressure paid off as the Blazers were able to sneak one in off the stick of Aaron Macklin. Despite a total of five power plays and two 5 on 3 opportunities; Edmonton's number one ranked penalty kill would hold the highly touted Blazers power play to 0 for 8 on the night.

The Kings would answer to end the second as a point shot from Keegan Lowe bounced off traffic in front of the net and landed on the stick of Cole Benson. Benson's finish was the Edmonton native's third goal of the season and regained the lead for the home side.

After a tough second frame the high octane Edmonton offense took off in the final period. Samuelsson took over as he tipped home his first of the night off a point shot from David Musil two minutes into the third. Samuelsson then hammered home his team leading 16th of the season on a one timer from the top of the slot four minutes later. The first round draft pick of his hometown Phoenix Coyotes barely missed on a breakaway chance for what would have been a natural hat trick a minute later.

Kamloops showed the resilience that has made them the WHL's leading team as Tim Bozon snapped a great shot over the shoulder of Jarry and under the bar to make it 4-2 with five minutes to play. But Mitch Moroz would stifle the Kamloops comeback attempt as he tipped a shot by Corbett only 12 seconds later to make it 5-2.

The win moved Jarry's record to 8-3-0-0 on the season with a WHL best 1.65 goals against average and a 0.933 save percentage. Jarry is expected to start the bulk of the Oil Kings games from now through the holiday season if goaltender Laurent Brossoit is named to Team Canada for the U20 World Juniors.
