Hitmen Win 2-1 over the Rebels
December 13, 2012 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Red Deer Rebels News Release
Playing on 12/12/12 the Rebels had a brand new player wearing #12 in this game as Adam Musil made his WHL debut. The Rebels first round pick in the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft had 22 points in 17 games with the Greater Vancouver Canadians of the BC Midget Hockey League (where he is teammates with Rebels goaltending prospect Taz Burman)"¨"¨
FIRST PERIOD
"¨"¨Starting in place of the absent Patrik Bartosak, Bolton Pouliot sparkled between the pipes early on for the Rebels. Not to be outdone, Chris Driedger made some solid saves of his own for the Hitmen."¨"¨Plenty of hits and plenty of scoring chances at both ends of the rink throughout the opening period, but there were no goals. 0-0 would be the score heading to the first intermission. Shots 14-11 favouring Red Deer.
"¨"¨SECOND PERIOD
"¨"¨Try as they might, these two teams had a tough time making it happen when it came to scoring goals. But it was anything but a boring period as the Hitmen and Rebels took their turns when it came to both big hits and scoring chances."¨"¨ However, as was the case in the first period, there was no scoring in the second. Shots in the period were 12-10 for Red Deer.
THIRD PERIOD"¨"¨
The Rebels hit the scoreboard first in the opening minute of the third period. Tyson Ness' first pass attempt was blocked. But he followed up on the play and slid a one-handed effort over to Joel Hamilton who tucked home his third goal of the season past Driedger. 1-0 Rebels just 42 seconds into the final frame. Ness extented his points streak to five games with his assist. Matt Bellerive, who earned the second assist, extended his points streak to four games."¨"¨
The Hitmen would reply just over five minutes later. Brooks Macek took a pass from Alex Roach and drove toward the Rebels net. Haydn Fleury ended up sweeping the puck into his own net past an unsuspecting Bolton Pouliot. Macek gets credit for his 13th goal of the season. 1-1 at the 5:46 mark."¨"¨
Calgary took the lead just 26 seconds later. Rebels killer Cody Sylvester drove hard into the Red Deer zone and set up Victor Rask. The talented Swede went top shelf past Pouliot for his third goal of the season. Peter Kosterman also earned an assist on the goal which made it 2-1 Hitmen at 6:12 of the period.
"¨"¨The Rebels came oh so close to tying the game courtesy of Conner Bleackley, his shot beat Driedger but nailed the post with just over six minutes remaining. Pouliot got some help from his crossbar at the other end with about four minutes remaining, it stayed a one goal game."¨"¨
The extra attacker would come on for the Rebels in the final minute, but they would come up empty. The Hitmen held on for a 2-1 victory. "¨"¨
