Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
Edmonton, AB.: The Edmonton Oil Kings got a lead and put away their first win in 12 games. Mark Pysyk, the team's top scoring defenseman, and Brent Raedeke, the leading point getter up front, led the way in a 3-1 win over the Regina Pats. Edmonton goaltender Torrie Jung made 20 saves an picked up the much needed win.
"It's a big win, it's huge," said Oil Kings Head Coach Steve Pleau. "We never lost our belief but at some point you have to get rewarded. It feels good and we have to build on it from here."
Pysyk went end to end to open the scoring about half way through the opening frame. The smooth skating defenseman made a couple of sweet moves, first at center and then at the blue line, before beating Pats keeper Damien Kelto high to the blocker side. The Oil Kings made it two nothing on the power play when Clayton Cumiskey set up Brent Raedeke from behind the net for his 16th of the year.
Edmonton's good fortunes continued early in the second period as they killed off a lengthy two man disadvantage. The first two periods saw nine minor penalties handed out, with five going against the Oil Kings, but there was no scoring.
Rookie Michael St. Croix capitalized on a Kelto giveaway behind the Pats net and scored his eighth of the season. Regina got a goal late in the third period from Jordan Weal, but that was as close as it got in a 3-1 Oil Kings win.
