Oil Kings Edge Wheat Kings

Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, MB. - In a battle of the Kings, it was the Edmonton Oil Kings edging the Brandon Wheat Kings 2-1 Saturday night at Westoba Place.
In what was an entertaining back and forth game between these two teams, the visitors got on the board first when David Kope's shot off the wing deflected off a stick and beat Brandon netminder Ethan Kruger upstairs at the 14:43 mark of the second period.
Brandon looked to have evened things up moments later when Ben McCartney redirected a shot off his skate past Edmonton's Todd Scott. The game officials though ruled that he had kicked the puck in and waved it off.
In the third, Edmonton captain Scott Atkinson scored what proved to the winner at the 7:28 mark.
The Wheat Kings, who finished the game with a season high 40 shots on goal, managed to get back to within one when defenceman Chad Nychuk beat Scott with less than two minutes remaining in regulation. However, despite a late powerplay and with Kruger on the bench for the extra attacker Brandon could not get the equalizer.
Brandon finished the night 1 for 7 with the man advantage, while outshooting the Oil Kings 40-34.
The Wheat Kings, who will close out a busy 3-game weekend Sunday night in Saskatoon against the Blades, are now 2-4-0 on the season.
Sunday's game will be the first of back to back games between the two teams, who will face off against one another Friday night at Westoba Place.
Tickets to that game go back on sale Monday morning at the Keystone Centre box office. Fans can also order online at keystonecentre.com or by calling (204) 726-3555.
