Edmonton Oil Kings News Release

EDMONTON, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings stood tall in the face of adversity Wednesday night in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Quarter-Finals as they tried to overcome the nine penalties assessed to them in a 3-1 loss to the Brandon Wheat Kings.

The Oil Kings were sent to the sin bin over and over again and found it hard to get in a rhythm after being shorthanded that many times despite killing off 7 of 9 penalties.

"Well I thought we played hard tonight," said head coach Steve Hamilton. "We got ourselves in a situation where penalties became an issue and that was the difference in the game."

Lane Bauer returned from an upper-body injury and immediately paid dividends as the Anchorage, Alaska product tipped a Ben Carroll point shot for his first postseason goal. Payton Lee was extremely busy again seeing 27 shots stopping all but three.

Hamilton was asked about the excessive penalties called but the savvy coach wasn't biting instead opting "to save my money".

"We know that's an explosive powerplay. It's tough to set the table for them over and over and over again. There were calls I didn't like and wasn't a fan of but they didn't ask my opinion when they made them."

The Wheat Kings got goals from Connor Gutenberg (1), Nolan Patrick (2) and Tyler Coulter (1) in the winning effort. Jordan Papirny was tested heavily making 33 of 35 saves.

The Oil Kings will have to forget about the tirade of penalties and the loss as they still hold a 2-1 series lead and will look to extend it to 3-1 less than 24 hours from now. Game 4 will be at 7pm tomorrow at Rexall Place and there are still plenty of good seats from oilkings.ca.
